FIERCE GUN BATTLE
I POLICE BOMBARD CHICAGO GANGSTERS ONE KILLED ON EACH SIDE (United. Service) NEW YORK, Wednesday, j There was a tragic sequel this evenj ing to the robbery at a road-house near | Chicago last Sunday, j A party of police went to the headquarters of the gang concerned in the outrage and a fierce fight ensued. The police bombarded the members of tbe gang in their rooms with machine-guns j and the robbers returned the fire with revolvers. I Police Sergeant Leo Fox, of the | Lansing foi-ce, was killed, as was Walter Warzinsky, aged 22, the leader of ‘ the bandits. Three others were wounded. Sam Fiddle, owner of a road-house near Chicago has been robbed so often that it was no surprise to him to have his fifth visitation of this year, said | a cable message from New York last Monday. At 5 a.m. yesterday the leader of what is known as the Robin Hood gang announced his presence by rising from his seat at a wine table and firing a volley of revolver shots into the floor. Sam merely sighed, opened his cash register and stood aside while the leader of the gang cut short the syncopations of the orchestra. The 100 guests were lined up against a wall and six robbers expeditiously removed £3OO from the till and took £I,OOO worth of jewels from the women. Instead of backing out of the doors the robbers then ordered drinks and smokes for everybody, “on the house.” When the bandits withdrew it was found that all the motorcars outside had been disabled so that pursuit was hopeless.
