POLICE OUTLINE CLEVER RUSE TWO BROTHERS CHARGED A new scheme for making money out of insurance offices was outlined by Chief-Detective Hammond at the Police Court this morning when two young men were charged with conspiring to defraud the Insurance Office of Australia Limited. The chief-detective said that the two young men were brothers. They had nsured their baggage consisting of four suitcases at Christchurch for £IBO. They then checked the lug?age through to Auckland and left Christchurch about the end of September. One brother came to Auckland with the checks and claimed the ■nggage. The other brother approached the insurance office urging that his baggage had been lost and trying to set money out of the company. The luggage was found in the possession of the brother who had obtained it at Auckland. Cecil William Mitchell, alias Cecil William Machin. a salesman aged 21, "as charged with attempting; to obtain £IBO from the Insurance Office of Australia by falsely representing that bis baggage was lost. With Arthur bioir Mitchell, a farmhand aged 22, he was also charged with conspiring to defraud. Mr. Sellar appeared for accused and asked for an adjournment explaining that h* had just been instructed. Counsel asked that accused be granted bail in their own recognisance. They

knew nobody in Auckland and it fvould be difficult to get a bondsman. “I understand that it is not the first time this has been done.” said the chief-detective. “We don't know the accused. They are travelling under fictitious names and they’re Pretty smart young fellows. They S *r, t^ e l’ come front Sydney.” Ball was fixed in personal bonds of £IOO each and a surety of £IOO for accused. The remand was granted until Thursday.
