WAIKATO CLUB’S FIXTURE
Several Stiff Problems
THE new trotting season in 1 set definitely in motion Trotting Club will stage a mot high-class events on its up-t A final review ol‘ the fixture 1. Tho progressiveness and managerial ability of officialdom which represents the Waikato Trotting Club is on a par with that met with in metropolitan areals, and these factors are mainly responsible- for the popularity that has been attained by the Hamilton light-harness promoters and enthusiasts. The desire of the controlling powers of the Waikato organisation has long been favourable toward owners and trainers, and whenever tho club achieved prosperity the profits were directed into a channel for general all-round improvements. The good financial surplus collected a few years back as a result of the Waikato fixture being held at Alexandra Park was speedily utilised to'lay down suitable tracks and erect modern appointments on the Claudelands property. So well was the scheme carried out that no club in New Zealand today can boast, a finer course than tho Hamilton trystingground. In the past the Waikato Club has held the first of its season’s meetings in December, but for various reasons.
one of which was to give owners of young and improving horses a chance to qualify for the Auckland spring carnival, a decision was arrived at in favour of racing early in October. Tomorrow will mark the first fixture under tho new scheme, and it promises to bo as successful—and perhaps more so—as previous functions held at Claudelands. Good fields, comprising many high-grade performers, will attract attention and tho racing promises to bo decidedly interesting and should produce some exciting contests with thrilling finishes. Secretary Reynolds has everything in apple-pie order for the successful carrying out of the fixture, and given a fine day there should be* a record attendance at Claudelands. Introductory Handicap This is the smallest field carded, showing a dearth of square-gaiters in
this class. Wild Downs should be the best of the limit lot, but Paradigm is closo enough to say he will overPhadow those in front of him. Te Ngutu is a fine beginner and it she could bp depended upon to see out the last furlong she might beat min’s trotter. Sweet Memory will go solidly and Togo’s Promise in ay prove equal to causing a surprise. The English mare Linnett the (treat is not ready yet so tho public will rely on Paradigm and Te Ngutu them
through. ~ Frankton Handicap A big field of improving pacers will [ parade in this heat and some promising ones arc on tho end. The young- | sters First Flight and Kewpie’s Guv, j are a likelv pair, but they may be j better served by a race or two. Contier Belle is a possibility and Nel do Beau, if file would eo away right would have a royal chance. ; Thorpe appears the best ot the 1 ront- j liners and lie will find tough opposition from lii-s Hastings rival, Peter ■ Llovd. who will stay out the Journey. Zealous is always dangerous; Regret . can go solid and Te Wahia will find j tho distance suitable. Limosa may prefer tho two-mile bout later, anci when tho machine closes My Thorpe • and Peter Lloyd may have most j friends. Mark Memorial Handicap A round dozen colour the card for the principal event of the day and the j class represented is decidedly good. t
the Auckland Province will be tomorrow when the Waikato dern and attractive schedule of I o-date course at Claudelands. by “Abaydos” is appended. This race is the subject of a special i ■ article under a separate Reading set- . ting out the prospects of the various J competitors. Summed up it points to Mountain Dell and Lindbergh being favourites, but if either is an absentee Warpiane wiM command respect. Hamilton Handicap | Square-gaiters of an interesting calibre will engage in a solid set-to ! in this heat. With a few exceptions I they claim an engagement in the unhoppled event latex*, for which some of th€i number may be reserved. If ready Gold Star would cause trouble off the front, and Kolmar has improved to such an extent he is sure |to bo dangerous. Lackiewood goes j out well, and if he cun see it out to , the bitter end will be a. nuisance. ! Akenebi only requires to go square to get some of the money and Anj seline cannot be overlooked. Then ! comes a nice trio in Etta Cole, I Floralino and Gold Sovereign, and from j j this lot may come the winner. If the i } footing is solid Etta Cole will be the ■ elect, with good support for Lackiewood. Claudelands Handicap This two-mile event is something in the nature of a try-out for the Northland Cup the following week, and its such has been accorded special mention in another column. Enawah, Polly’s Picture, Our Nancy, Arachne (if started), Limosa and Explosion will all command attention from backers, with a strong leaning toward Enawah and Limosa (if started) or Polly's Picture. Stewards' Handicap Her© comes a poser for the boys—and the girls, too. A mile dash with a largo field of good spi'inters to choose from. Gold Cast, Nella Dillon. War spite and Hob or o are off the deep end, and the first two can begin like lightning, which is a big consideration in such a race. Pearl Logan
is on th© improve and sure to be a nuisance, while of those just behind her Great Peter and Vendome appeal. Tho former is a brilliant customer at the distance, but he has an eai'lier en- ( gagement which may affect him. Venj dome, it ready, will give a lot of them ; a fright, while Mountain Dell, if rej served, would give th© rest some I hurry up. Ot tiic remainder, Joy'Bird ! looks tho best. Great Peter will be | favoured over Vendome, but if the former is absent Nella Dillon will have j friends. President's Handicap j This is where the free-legged pacers i meet the squai*e-gaited merchants and the bout should be interesting. Condor • Belle, Bell Dial and Master Huia rcpresent the made trotters, and they ! uro a useful ti'io. The square-gaiters j have some solid ones uphold the j pure gait, Peterson, Kolmar and : Akenehi being handy. The running in i the Hamilton trot will throw light on i tho chances of most of tho trotters. Bell Dial, who has two other engage- | ments, will probably be first choice, ! but if absent Conder Belle and Peterson will be in the boom. Visitors' Handicap
The biggest field of the day will be > seen out lor the final flutter, and quite j a number will be making a second appearance. Great Parrish will have ? xt lot ot admirers, while Gold Cfest is j nicelv on the front. Te Wahia, Mae- ' renga Pai, Polly’s Picture, Dealer, . Andover and Belle Ax worthy present
a formidable second line, and the latter only needs to be right to make it merrv. Arachne and Ilohoro look the best of the next lot, while Our Nancy may bo most dangerous of the back markers. Public fancy will lean toward Belle Axworthy and Great Parrish.
