Meprisant Is Fancied For Dunedin Guineas

DUNEDIN, Thursday. Dutch Money scored such a brilliant j victory in the Maungatua Handicap at Wingatui today that it is almost certain she will be a strong fa.vourite for the Dunedin Guineas on Saturday. But the problem backers are pondering is whether she would have won so easily had Meprisant and Disorder both escaped trouble —and Meprisant had a shocking passage, and nearly came to grief twice on the journey. But ; despite this big handicap, he finished ! strongly in the straight, just behind I the placed horses. But for the interference, Meprisant would certainly have tested Dutch Money. Indeed, in his rider's opinion, the gelding would have won had he been able to steer clear of trouble. Of course. Dutch Money conceded him 201 b in today’s race, and as Meprisant has to give the filly 51b in the Guineas, it is only logical to suppose that she will again finish in front of him in Saturday’s classic. Dutch Money is sure to make the pace, and with her astute jockey, C. Emerson, in the saddle, she is bound to take some running down. She ran out the seven furlongs attached to today’s race impressively, but the extra furlong in the Guineas may steady her, and if there is any lacking on her part, then Meprisant will thoroughly test her. During his lengthy career in the I saddle. C. Emerson has not yet won the Dunedin Guineas, but he is con- | fident that he will go close to winning ; this year’s event. Meprisant, however, is going to be : a very formidable rival, and with such \ a vigorous horseman as B. H. Morris • in the saddle, he is sure to run a big has also to be reckoned with.

and she has not started since she ran second to Pink Coat in the spri?;g event at Ashburton. But she has done exceptionally well since, and will strip a very fit mare for Saturday’s big race. Gold Tinge looked burly when he ran in the sprint today, but despite his bulky appearance he finished well, and should be improved by the race. Disorder has a big following, and if she gets a better run than she did in the Maungatua Handicap she will give no end of trouble. There is no reason whatever to doubt her galloping ability, and she finished so well today after covering a lot of extra ground as to suggest that the mile journey of Saturday’s race will not see her at a disadvantage. Blue Metal’s performance today ensures him of solid support. but Aspiring will need t<* show vast improvement on her Electric Handicap running to have a chance race. He should clean her up, however, but she does not appeal. It would not be surprising to see her start in the spring event, which should see her to better advantage. Comique and Stealth do not appear to have good prospects, and will be at big prices. A great race is promised, but Meprisant may hold his rivals over the concluding stages. He is a real stayer, and later in the season promises to develop into a firstclass three-year-old. The places may be disputed by MEPRISANT DUTCH AI. ON E Y DISORDER. It is quite likely that the trio will be very heavily supported, with Dutch Money the actual favourite, and with Stealth perhaps as holding the best
