"EARLY BIRD"
Dunedin Final The spring meeting of the Dunedin Racing Club concludes tomorrow, when the Guineas comes up for decision. The A.J.C. meeting at Randwick also ends tomorrow. Whangarei Meeting Entries for all events at the Whangarei meeting on November 9 and 11 close at 5 p.m. -today with the secretary at Whangarei, or with Messrs. Blomfield and Company, Auckland. Auckland Cup Nominations for the Auckland Cup and other leading events at the summer meeting of the Auckland Racing Club are due by 5 p.m. today with the secretary, Mr. W. S. Spence. The Two Cups The Caulfield Cup is to be run tomorrow week and the Melbourne Cup on November 5. The New Zealand Cup is to be decided on November 9. Reed's Programme R. Reed, rider of Nightmarch in the A.J.C. Epsom and Metropolitan Handicaps, must have had a very profitable trip, for he would not be left out of the division of the spoils. A report has it that Nightmarch is to go to Melbourne, and that Reed will go with him. On the other hand Reed has contracted to be back in New Zealand for the Masterton meeting on October J 9, and he will be required at Trentham a week later for J. U. Jefferd’s horses. Returning It is probable that many of the New Zealand horses now in Australia will be shifted home immediately after the Australian Jockey Club’s meeting. In anticipation of this programme, Concentrate, Oratrix, Paquito and Bright Glow have had engagements made for them at Trentham, wiiile the three first named figure in important Kiccarton events, where Nightmarch, Honour and Jalcux are also engaged. Brother To Phar Lap In view of the Night Raid colt Phar Lap’s decisive victory in the A.J.C. Derby on Saturday, one of the centres of attraction at next January’s yearling sales at Trentham will undoubtedly be the Deroy winner’s full brother. This colt, a well grown brown with an exceptionally fine set of legs, will be offered on account of his breeder, Mr. A. F. Roberts. Education for Youngsters When the field in Saturday’s Guineas went out to do their preliminary four Eilerslie-trained two-year-olds were included in the bunco. The juveniles were allowed this opportunity of gaining some experience, and their flutter over a furlong and a-half evinced some interest. J. Williamsons pair, Thespis (.Thespian—Rose Queen) and Tremetus (Treciare —Lady Mildred), prevailed by a narrow margin over A. Cunningham’s youngsters,* Potli by Day Comet, from Lady Ridicule and The Sapling respectively. Two Failures Diamond Queen missed the jump-out in her only engagement at me Auckland meeting, the Normanby Handicap. and but for a short-lived forward move, was always chasing the rest home. iva wainga, too, was at the back of the field at the end of a furlong and she failed to improve her position, although she went better the second day, but the two races the mare had at the fixture should bring her to the proper pitch for future outings. Off Colour Gold Money’s gallops prior to the Auckland meeting indicate! that she was going off form, and the manner in which she ran in the Shorts Handicap on the first day at Ellerslie confirmed that view. Prominent when the tapes were skied, she drifted a bit, but still was always within range ol’ the pacemakers. The daughter of Paper Money was not fax' away at the end. but she is capable of better performances than this, and is apparently not quite right at present. Won Impressively Refresher looked a picture when he went out for the Hobson Handicap at Ellerslie on Monday, and his price ruled as the shortest of the day. He was taken to the front at the end of two furlongs—a thing that Goldfinch rarely does unless victory seems assured —and allowed to bowl along comfortably, being eased at the turn, and waiting on Gay Cockade all the way up the straight, then going away in the last 100 yards to score decisively. It was an impressive piece of work <>n both the ride.r’s and horse’s part, and it would seem as if Refresher is going to do a lot of good service for his mentor, J. T. Jamieson. The Takanini trainer also had Vali engaged in this race, but the half-brother to Mint Leaf gives the impression that he will take time to come right.
Poor Efforts Sleepy Sol made a poor showing in the Trial Hurdles at Ellerslie on Saturday, and was always near the tail end of the field, and he was not assisted by the mix-up at the first fence. His jumping was not up to his usual standard, and it is possible that the falls he had in the two previous hurdle races he contested shook his confidence. Adjuster, too, was another* who ran badly, and he will need to show plenty of improvement to prove a winner over sticks. I-Ie contested the Onehunga Steeplechase on the second day, but indifferent jumping and lack of stamina saw him well behind the rest at the end. For Trentham In keeping with previous meetings, Auckland’s representation at the Wellington Racing Club’s spring meeting is likely to be small, for 'excluding candidates from J. T. Jamieson’s stable, trainers appear shy of making such a long journey. Less than a dozen horses from these parts are included in the nominations. but it would seem as if a share of the money is likely to come this way. if the following entries afford a criterion:—Oil King. Bells of Shandon, Mithra, True Blood. Prince Humphrey, Eaglet, Lady’s Boy, Paddon. Paganelli, Vali and Sea Col). Winning Sires’ List Through the agency of Eaglet. Royal Ruler and iChief Link, Mr. John Donald’s imported sire. Chief Ruler, easily topped the list of winning sires at the Auckland Racing Club’s meeting over last week-end. Hunting Song’s sons, Hunting Cry and Pink
Coat. contributed sufficient stake money to place the son of Hurry On in second place, and Historic’s success in the Mitchelson Cup alone gave Nassau third honours. The following is an account of the various sums credited to the various sires:—Chief Ruler, £ 2,300; Hunting Song, £925; Nassau, £900; Quin Abbey, £755; Catmint, £650; Paper Money, £525; Day Comet, £490; Spalpeen, £400; Some Boy IT.. £350; Lucullus, £350; Tea Tray, £300; Valkyrian, £300; Elysian, £300: Martian, £250; Ilossendale, £150; Archery, £100: Magpie. £100; Mollowmas, Cl 00: Sarchedon. £75: Warplane, £7O: Solferinn. £7O: j Depredation, £7O: California. COO; Quarantine, £SO; Swift Flight, £SO: Psychology, £SO; Westeourt, £3O. and Lord.Quex, £3O. Vallar’s Form Only one race was exacted from Vallar during the A.R.C. meeting, and in his effort in the Shorts Handicap he showed all the speed for which he is renowned. As expected, he petered out when the pressure was applied, but it cannot be long before the son of ■ Valkyrian is again in the limelight. The race will sharpen him up, and if he is extended a nomination for the sprints at the Takapuna meeting next month there will be many wanting to be with him, especially as he has several weeks’ training to look forward to. Myola Sent South The Awapuni trainer, R. E. Hatch, brought only Piuthair and Askari to Auckland, but there were three horses under his direction when he left home. The addition was the Catmint —Demoiselle mare, Myola, who up till Monday had done her racing under F. Gilchrist’s control. Myola has always been referred to as a promising maiden, and in her only start this season she finished close up in a field of 29 runners in the Mount Albert Handicap, on the second day of the Avondale spring meeting last month. Too Good for Him Knightlike showed a lot of speed from the extreme outside in the Epsom Handicap at Ellerslie on Monday, and was the first to actually turn for home. But he could not go on with it, and was relegated to seventh place at the end. The weights he is compelled to carry in hack company have encouraged his connections to attempt the open sprints, but as yet the son of Paladin is not quite up to the speed merchants. At less important meetings he should prove more than capable in the open class.
