HARBOUR BOARD VETERANS
until it made an excellent showing last "season, has disbanded. Newcoming elevens to senior ranks are Albion, which will really take Victoria’s place, and W.Y.M.1., which shows great promise. Arn Gedyc, former stalwart lor Ellerslie, has gone over to Albion and Stallworthy, who played consistently for Victoria, has also linked tip with Albion. Harbour Board will still have such excellent players as Len Breese, Archie Dunning and A. Turner. By the departure of the fine allrounder, Bob lnnes, for a position in Y.M.C.A. in the A.C.A. cqjiipetition, Ponsonby has lost a valuable player. It will still have Fletcher, Trevor Spicer, Robertshaw, Barnes and Mackie. The young talent of Green Lane,
with the Watts brothers prominent, will be seen in action again and Ellerslie will field Ralph Burton, its prolific scorer, Lawrence, Hetherington and Yates. W.Y.M.1., while it is known as a rising team, is being regarded as the possible surprise of the season.
Just what Alec Kerr, who once played inter-State cricket in Australia and who last year strengthened Glen Eiden and figured with the association’s rep resentati ves, will do is by no means definite. The entries for the competitions will not close until Octbber 21, so there may be additions to the growing club strength of the association. The policy of encouraging the younger players will be followed steadily, but the association is in the position of other sports bodies in being hampered by a lack of playing areas. The event of the season will be the Walker Shield tournament for the suburban associations of New Zealand, to be held at Christmas on the Domain. Auckland is the holder, but Wellington and Christchurch will send formidable sides North. There is a possibility of the holding of the first. Dominion tournament fpr junior representatives at the time of the senior contests.
Junior players showed themselves to bo eager to gain, pointers from last season’s coaching and the principle of developing the younger talent has been justified by the rise of many young cricketers to senior play.
