WOMEN’S CHAMPIONSHIP MISS CULLING BEATEN (United Service J WELLINGTON, Today. The tournament to decide the Wellington provincial ladies’ golf championship was commenced on the 3-lere-taunga links yesterday, when Miss Beadel, of Christchurch, took the honour by defeating Miss Culling, of Auckland, by 3 up and 1 to play. A gallery of about 100 was not treated to a high-class display, as both women appeared to he stale after their strenuous games at the New Zealand championship tourney at Christchurch, and they did not play anything like up to their customary form, though both drove long balls off the tees. Their direction was not of the best, and neither could handle their putters with anything like accuracy. The weather was the best which had been experienced during the tournament. The fairways and greens were in tiptop condition.
; In the semi-finals, Miss Beadel beat Miss McClure 3 and 2, and Miss Culling beat Miss Chrystall at the nineteenth. Miss McClure was apparently not playing up to her best form, her putting being generally weak. The game between Miss Culling and Miss Chrystall was very keenly contested, going to the nineteenth hole, hut there were no outstanding Incidents in the final. Miss Beadel was 1 up at the turn, and thenceforward Miss Culling won only one hole, the fourteenth, tenth, twelfth, fifteenth, and sixteenth being halved! Miss Beadel won at the seventeenth 3 up and 1, OTAHUHU WINS BASKETBALL TOURNEY There was a large gathering of basketball enthusiasts at the Otahuhu school courts recently, when teams from the suburban primary school assembled in force for the annual competition for the Otahuhu Trotting Club’s shield.
