NOT SUITABLE

Wellington Climate and Electric Light Sports (Special to TUB SUX' WELLINGTON, Thursday. I Electric light sports meetings, which were a feature of Wellington athletics last summer, came in for some criti- ) cism at the annual meeting of the • Welli.ngt* n Amateur Athletic Club this week. The chairman (Mr. A. C. Kitto). ! in moving the adoption of the annual j report, said that the question of again i holding electric light meetings at the Basin Reserve would have to be very i c.eriously considered. The majority of , night meetings held last season had j not been a financial success, and a I number of competitors had also expressed the opinion that Saturday afternoon meetings were preferable to meetings held under electric light. The lighting at the Basin Reserve was by no means all that it should be. although it had cost a great deal of money to install, but this was probably due to the awkward layout of the ground itself. In view of this statement by Mr. Kitto, added to which it lias to be admitted that the Wellington climate is not really suitable to night sports meetings, it seems probable that they will be dropped altogether, or possibly only one or two held where last season they were held as frequently as every other Saturday in the middle of the season. Members of the Wellington Club, however, were not altoj gether consistent in regard to the matter as later in the evening it was decided to make an application to the Wellington Centre for permission to ' hold an electric light meeting on January 13. Several members thereupon questioned the advisability of holding ! such meetings and a recommendation ! was carried that the centre be asked to hold more afternoon meeting's during the summer, the motion saying nothing i for or against electric light meetings.
