MISSIONARY DAY
BAPTISTS in conference YEAR’S WORK DISCUSSED
Today was ‘ Missionary Day” at the Baptist Conference held in the Tabernacle Upper Queen Street. Proceedings opened this mornn;; with a welcome to missionaries from me Indian field who are on furlough, he Rev. H. A. and Mrs. Jones and >iisa Bradtield. The Rev. K. W. Grigg, u a who is home on sick leave, wy.s also present. ... Loyalty to missionaries supported by the Baptist Church was urged by speakers during discussion on the report the Mew Zealand Baptist Missionary Society. Many representatives oi other societies are helped by collection* taken at lectures and by subscriptions, thus diverting a substantial revenue from the Church’s funds. Many of these missionaries were" really deputationists. The committee announced that arrangements are being made for a moving picture film of work in India to be shown in New Zealand. It is expected to bo completed about March next. The balance sheet of the society, presented by Mr. F. N. Andrews, chairman of the Finance Committee, showed that, although the amount raided this year was larger than any >in:e 1920, it fell short of expenditure by £550. The amount raised through normal channels was less by £B7B than the actual expenditure, leaving a debit balance of £243 14s lid. The Rev. J. J. North pointed out, however, that the society still has a redit balance, as there is £845 in hand in India. The Church raises an average of about £1 a member for missions. An amendment was passed to the rule regarding the constitution of the executive, the words ’‘the presidents <>f the five district unions of the Baptist Women's Missionary Union” being removed.
Officers were elected as follow: Secretary and treasurer, All*. M. W. P. Lascelles (re-elected); missionary editor, the Rev. Stanley Jenkins (rejected); committee. Revs. S. Takle, s J >nkins. J. Ings. E. N. Goring, AV. S. ■Rollings and C. W. Dtlnohmb, Dr. C. North and Mr. 11. 11. Driver. The preacher for 1930 will be the Rev. A. W. Bean. The Rev. A. J. Grigg was selected as lay-preacher. PRESENTATION TO UNION VALUABLE RECORDS Two albums containing historical records of the Baptist Union and photographs of the ministers were presented to the union by the retiring presidertt, Mr. Samuel Barry, at the Baptist Conference last evening. Mr. Barry urged the need for greater loyalty, liberty, and love among the people of the Church as the only means by which progress can be assured. The work done by Air. Barry during his IS months in office was referred to in appreciative terms by the Revs. Manley Jenkins and A. \V. Stuart.
