BACKLESS BATHING SUITS
Sir. I assume from an article published in The Sun yesterday that beach inspectors are likely to make nuisances of themselves on the Auckland beaches during the coming summer, and that no Lido sunshine-suits will be displayed by the young women bathers. I think this is a pity. If there are prudes in our midst who object to girls displaying a perfectly harmless expanse of shoulder and back, why not let them stay away from the beach? The beach is no place for them. I think it is an uncommonly sensible idea for girls to have as much of the sunshine as they can get—goodness knows we see little enough of it outside the summer months—and so long as they are within the bounds of decency what is there to growl about? Methinks it is usually those who have no feminine charms to display in the bright sunshine who object to display of colour and physical attractiveness. I do believe some of these persons would have our bathing girls enter the water fully attired in crinoline skirts and high-necked collars, so that every vestige of them is covered by clothes. Dear, sweet old things. How they themselves would love to be able to wear a. Lido suit! And. sir, some of the nmn are more pronounced "old women” than the women themselves. PEP.
