OUTBOARD RACING
FIRST MEETING OF NEW CONTROLLING BODY MANY DONATIONS MADE “No sport has given me such a thrill." “More than 1,000 clubs in Canada and the United States of America cater for outboards and the fields range from 20 to 35 boats.” “Outboard racing is undocibtedly the coming summer sport at Home.” THESE statements were made at the **■ first meeting of the Outboard Division of the New Zealand PowerBoat Association held in tire Chamber of Commerce last evening.
The cliairmaji, Mr. E. J. Schofield, said a great deal of enthusiasm had been worked up last year, and that had laid the foundation for outboard racing in Auckland. t Through lack of organisation, the various clubs who had done their best in catering for outboards, had been unable to secure large enough fields. It was considered generally that the sport should be controlled by a separate body and so that body had been formed.
“High speeds have already been attained and that will be continued so long as the racing is properly controlled,” declared Mr. Schofield. He exhorted all present to join the division and give their enthusiastic support to its activities.
The meeting, which was attended by boat-owners and others interested, was marked by the keenest' approval of the inauguration of the new body. It was stated that several donations had been made already. Mr. L. Stericker had promised a crane, for lifting boats and engines; Mr. E. Maud, a starting clock; John Burris and Co., a cup and £5; Mr. Robert Laidlaw, a cup every year; Mr. C. PI. T. Palmer, a cup; Dr. E. Stevenson, a trophy. Added to these, £7l in cash and trophies was promised in the room.
The subscription to the division has been fixed at £1 3s for boat-owners and 10s Gd for non-boat-owners. The following officers were elected; Vice-patrons, Messrs. R. Burns, R. A. Laidlaw, B. Smith, J. Johnson, A. C. Whitney, M. H- Tisdalll. JN Cropper, S. Woodroffe; club captain, Mr. Jl. Moual; vice-captain, Mr. G. Robertson; hon. treasurer, Mr. E. R. Butler; hon. secretary, Mr. G.
