TWO CLASSIC CONTESTS Another Try-Out for Chide
A 'l' the Dunedin spring meeting, to be held at the Wingatui course tomorrow and Saturday, there are two classic races to be decided—the McLean Stakes (two-year-olds and the Dunedin Guineas. The former event is to be run row and the Guineas on Saturday.
A fine programme lias been drawn up for the opening day. the fields being excellent throughout, and promising spirited contests. Ex-North Island horses are not so prominent this time, although in the Hurdles they appear : to hold a strong hand, representing as ; they do half the field. . The first event is the Spring Hurdles Kapuna has been going over the big country lor a time, and Carinthia, if in the mood, is liable to make a onehorse race of it. Guncase is useful, and Beauty Light was in and out at Timaru recently. Antrim Boy ran a second and a first at the same gathering, and of the trio further down Grand Lupin
and Rangiawl io have chances, the former especially if it is wet. Favourites may be ANTRIM BOY CARINTHIA. Trial Stakes The majority of those engaged here are unknown quantities, but promising tliree-year-olds should be able tp hold their own. Two of this age that will not laqk support are SAILING HOML COMIQUE Maungataua Handicap Here again is a formidable list, with three tliree-year-olds in Francolin. Dutch Money and Stealth heading the list. Red Boa has the performances for the winter behind him, and on the other side of the handicap are promising ones such as Meprisant, who defeated Desert Song at Timaru; Disorder, Salmo Salar, Wild Work and Some Toff. Perhaps the best supported will be MEPRISANT DUTCH MONEY.
Electric Handicap Silver Paper has a big weight in the sprint, but he is a good one. and has been doing well on the tracks of late. Perhaps he will be all the better for a race. Black Duke and Red Heckle go fast, and Royal Saxon appears to be striking form again. Kin Tin Tin is smart, and so is Meadow Lark who was conspicuous in his last race.’ Gold Tinge would be the probable winner if he could get his dash back, and advices from Riccarton indicate that he is expected to be at his best, particularly as he is expected to run a great race in the Guineas on Saturday. Speed Light failed last week, and may not be at her best yet. Aspiring will be bracketed with Silver Paper, making a nice coupling. Waving Corn is fast, and Night Lid is expected to improve on Ashburton running. Caterpillar was disappointing at Timaru, and the prospects arc that tne racing there has worked a big im-
GOLD TIXGI-: MEADOW LARK Mosgicl Handicap Small, but select, sums up the handicap field. Pink N’ote galloped nicely , « n Tuesday morning, and he may still require a race into him. Chide is in great order, and this will be a fitting final public wind-up to his New Zealand Cup preparation. Taboo is not lancied now that the tracks are hardening up. Black Mint may show some improvement on recent running, and Money Mine’s failures at Timaru ran be overlooked. Malmsley is tit. and the penalised Evening, Circulation and Membo will assist in making it an interesting contest, in which the pubic iancies may be CHIDE MONEY MINE: McLean Stakes This is the two-year-old classic, of mall financial value, but interesting in that it will introduce the best ; South Island youngsters. From what i an be learned at present it seems | to be regarded as a. duel between A 1 I Jolson (the speedy Motley’s first foal, by Limond) and Tray Bond (Tea Tray —Victory Bond), the latter of whom has I been burning up the tracks at Riccar- ; ton for some time. Al Jolson sprinted very fast yesterday morning. Spoon. The Geisha. Countermarch, Compensation the Charmaine colt, and Satisfy are also well thought of. But it seems as if the first-mentioned pair will can y the money: TRAY BOND AL JOLSON October Handicap Of the ten remaining in. Taboo and Membo are also in the Mosgiel Handicap, but the latter could be solidly recommended if reserved for this race. Royal Game is a. possibility, and so are Wingatui (a Timaru winner). Latin Quarter and Honeycomb. E'urther down there are Sudden Storm and E'irst Raid. Favourites may be HONEYCOMB ROYAL GAME. Taioma Handicap There are several of those engaged in the final event that could be numbered among the list of possibilities, but perhaps the actual machine favourites will be DESERT SONG MOUNT BOA. I Tlie Dunedin Guineas will be reI viewed on Friday, for the form shown j today may have considerable bearing on this classic.
