PERMANENT ROADWORK

NGARUAWAHIA-OHINEWAI From Our Own Correspondent HAMILTON, Tuesday. The permanent surfacing of the Great South Road between Ngarawahia and Ohenewai is to be carried out by the Waikato County Council. In deciding on this course today the council believed it would save the ratepayers a lot of money. The Main Highways Board advised that it had decided to delegate to the county the powers of construction and maintenance over this section of the highway. The county engineer, Mr. Woodward, pointed out that he constructed four miles of the bitumen road at Huntly ■ for under £2,500 a mile. The Public I Works constructed the continuation | of the road at £4,000 a mile and it I was cracking up. It was decided to apply for the first instalment of £ 5,000 and advise the Highways Board that the council desired to construct the road, the chairman, Mr. T. Hinton, remarking that it was desirable to place the onus on the board.
