MOTORIST’S GOOD TURN
POLICE PROSECUTION FOLLOWS NOT PLYING FOR HIRE (Special to THE SUN) PAEROA, Monday. A storekeeper who lent her motorcar to meet an emergency call for help had to face charges of unlawfully using a private car to transport fare-paying passengers when it was insufficiently insured. The case was heard at the Paeroa Police Court before Mr. F. W. Platts, S.M. Tli© defendant was Mrs. Alice Relirns, of Hikutaia, and the charges were dismissed. Emily Murdoch said an elderly woman required medical treatment. The taxi-driver was not available to take her to the station, and Mrs. Kehms sent her. son with her car. When she got out witness gave him Is 6d for himself. Frank Brown, farm hand, said that when his employer could not get the taxi, Rehms drove him to the station. Witness gave him 5s for his trouble. Sergeant Calwell withdrew two of the charges. He said he was unable to produce the regulations under which a motor-car, plying as a public vehicle was required to pay an insurance premium of £ 7 10s a year, against the £1 fee for private cars. After hearing further evidence the magistrate dismissed all charges, holding that the production of the regulations was unnecessary in the light of the evidence of witnesses, who had simply been obliged by a motorist in their “hour of trial.”
