CRUSHED UNDER TRAIN
TERRIBLE INJURIES CAUSE MAN’S DEATH
ACCIDENT NEAR PAERATA Falling from a moving train near Paerata on Saturday evening resulted in shocking injuries, which proved fatal, to Mr. John Fryer, aged 49, married, of Helvetia Road, Pukekohe. Mr. Fryer was returning from Auckland to Pukekohe on the 5.30 p.m. Auckland-Frankton race train. Shortly after leaving Paerata railway station he went on to the platform of his carriage, and as he did not return other passengers informed the guard, and Constable O’Donnell, of Pukekohe, who was travelling on the train. Upon reaching Pukekohe Constable O’Donnell boarded a North-bound train to make a search of the line. Meanwhile Mr. Fryer had been discovered lying on a cattle-stop at the side of the railway-line about 200yds south of the Paerata railway station. The discovery was made by Mr. Jamieson, jun., of Paerata, who was attracted to the spot by groans, which he heard when crossing the line. Assistance was immediately procured, and after being attended by Dr. A. T. Begg, of Pukekohe, he was removed to the Auckland Hospital by ambulance. Mr. Fryer was admitted at 9.45 p.m. in an unconscious condition. He died at 2.50 a.m. yesterday.^ Mr. Fryer, who is employed as a share-milker by Mr. J. Beatty, farmer, of Paerata, is survived by his wife and four children. At an inquest opened this morning before Mr. F. K. Hunt, S.M., coroner, evidence of identification only was taken.
