EARL OF HAREWOOD DEAD

LORD LASCELLES’S AGED FATHER IN EIGHTY-FOURTH YEAR (Australian and N.Z. Press Association) (United Service) Reed. 10 a.m. LONDON, Sunday. The death has occurred of the Earl of Harewood, father of Viscount Lascelles. The Earl, says a British Official Wireless message, had not been in good health for some time. It was reported that, despite a comfortable night, he was weaker this morning. Viscount Lascelles and the other members of the family have arrived at Harewood House. Henry Ulich Lascelles, fifth Earl of Harewood, celebrated his 83rd birthday in August of this year. He was the son of the fourth earl, and Elizabeth, daughter of the first Marquis of Clanriearde, and succeeded his father in 1892. He married in 1881 Lady Florence Katherine Bridgeman, daughter of the third Earl of Bradford. There are two sons and one daughter, the eldest being Viscount Lascelles, who is married to Princess Mary. The earl was at Eton. In 1878 he was attached to a special mission to Spain. He was a retired captain of the Grenadier Guards, and was lieutenant of the West Riding of Yorkshire from 1904 to 1927. He owned about 29,700 acres. The earldom of Harewood was created in 1812. Edward Lascelles, the head of this well-known Yorkshire family, had been created Baron Harewood in 1796, an earlier creation of this name having become extinct when its first holder died. The family estates are in the West Hiding of Yorkshire, the chief seat being Harewood House, near Leeds.
