“THE YOUNGER GENERATION’' Adapted from the successful stage play by Fannie Hurst, “It Is To Faugh/’ the film version entitled “The Younger Generation/’ is now at the Boxy Theatre. The capable director of “The Donovan Affair,” Frank R. Capra, lias made this picture into a tense human interest drama, and ably tells the story of how the advent of sudden riches wrecks the happiness of a home. A number of clever character artists make their entry into speaking films in “The Younger Generation,” Jean Hersholt has the role of “Fa” Goldfinch, a street vendor of the East Side of New York, while Ricardo Cortez represents the son, Morris Goldfinch. The well-known emotional actress, L:.na Basquette, plays the part of the daughter. “Birdie.” . The Goldfinch family has its beginning in humble circumstances, with “Pa” Goldfinch and his wife rearing two children on the slender earnings from his street push-cart. The girl’s childhood sweetheart is Eddie Lesser, a boy with marked ability as a composer. The son. Morris, however, displays keen business ability and rises in his chosen business of art dealer and antiquary. His success encourages him to mix in society, and ho falls in love with the daughter of a wealthy family. He. brings his parents to his own palatial home, and at the same time forbids liis sister to associate with her old sweetheart. The programme at the Roxy comprises a number of short talkie features. including an all-talking comedy, a humorus singing feature. “Memories”; Hawaiian songs by the three Bronx Sisters, and items by a quartet.
Morgan Farley, stage player, who recently appeared as Rex Greene in ••The Green Murder Case.” has been signed to a long-term contract. His next part is with Richard Dix in “The Love Doctor,” a Paramount all-talkie. Paramount will soon release in New Zealand a notable talking and singing picture titled “The Dance of Life.” Nanov Carroll and Hal Skelly play the leading roles in the production which is a talkie version of the famous stage success “Burlesque.”
