EMPLOYEE OF CHINESE FINED An elderly man, Lewis Stokes, who was- caught working in a Chinese market garden in Onehunga on Sunday, September 15, was . convicted and called upon to pay 10s costs at the Onehunga Police Court this morning. Stokes, who pleaded guilty, told the court that as he had been out of work for some time, he took a chance with this job from Wong Chong. Constable Hinton deposed to seeing a number of men working in the Chinese garden in full view of the public. A similar charge against Basil Stokes was dismissed. The employer. Wong Chong, and three Chinese who did not appear, were each fined 10s and costs. The magistrate, Mr. F. H. Levien, | S.M.. told a witness who was buying l lettuce from the Chinese at the same : time that he was fortunate in not j having been charged with aiding and 1 abetting.
