STOCKS SLIDE HEAVILY
OUTBREAK OF SELLING IN NEW YORK BILLIONS FLUNG INTO FRAY Australian and N.Z. Press * Association Reed. 1.39 p.m. NEW YORK, Friday. A fresh outbreak of selling struck the Stock Market in the last hour today. The greatest excitement prevailed. The tickers were unable to keep up with the deluge of orders, and were an hour late at one time. Both stock market and kerb sales were extremely heavy. The stock sales totalled 5,623,900 shares. In the last five minutes, powerful financial interests became alarmed, and threw billions of dollars into the fray, saving several leaders which had been sliding fast; but the time was too short to help much, and most of the issues finished with severe losses.
