Mr. A. B. Card, postmaster at Taumarunui, supplies the following statistics covering the district for September:—Births, 17; deaths, 4; marriages, 4. Total rainfall for month. 5.28 in; heaviest fall, 1.20 in. on September 8. * • • A number of Manunui residents met at the home of Mrs. and Miss Burnand and gave a farewell to Mr. and Mrs. A. Cooper, who have been esteemed residents of the township for the past 21 years. The proceedings comprised musical items, dancing and card games and at an early stage the health of the guests was honoured. Mr. It I*’ Beautrais, who presided, referred to the regret with which they all regarded the departure of such old friends. Mr. and Mrs. Cooper had been prominent in everything for the good of the town and district, and would take with them the good wishes of everyone. On behalf of their friends, Mr. Beautrais made a presentation to eacli of the guests. Mr. J. Body also spoke in complimentary terms. In responding, Mr. Cooper said it was a wrench to break away after 21 years. • • • The final korero of the Taumarunui Savage Club for the season was presided over by Savage C. R. Moore, who granted the prayer of the younger braves to entertain the wahines oiv October 16. A very amusing letter was read from one of the original promoters of the club, Past-Rangatira A. S. Mclsaac, of Palmerston North. Savages J. Dunn, Joyes, Frank, Calderwood, Brown, Brinkman, Arthur and Kenderdine contributed to a pleasant programme. • • • The women of the Kaitieke Basketball Club have promoted the formation of a tennis club for the coming season. At a well-attended meeting of enthusiasts, Mr. J. Dempsey was appointed president, Miss N. Dempsey and Mr. J. Dobbs, joint secretaries; committee, Mrs. N. Dempsey, jun., Miss R. Rutherford, Miss Gwen Dobbs, Mr. N. Dempsey, jun., Mr. P. Turner and Mr. S. Dobbs. Working bees are busy in preparing the new courts. * * • At the fortnightly meeting of the Taumarunui Borough Council, Dr. J. Boyd, medical officer of health, Auckland, advised that ,the necessary arrangements had been made in accordance with the council’s wishes for a bacteriological examination of the water supply. A letter from the Feilding Borough Council enclosing a resolution asking the Government to defer dealing with the proposed Urban Farm Lands Rating Bill for 12 months in order that it might be fully considered by municipalities and the Municipal Association in particular was received. The Mayor. Mr. C. A. Boles, stated that a considerable amount of land in the Taumarunui Borough would be affected by the Bill, and the council resolved to support the Feilding Council’s request. At its fortnightly meeting the Taumarunui Domain Board decided to assist the Cricket Association by charging this year’s rental at a reduction of £5, as a result of representations made by a deputation consisting of Messrs. W. H. Hughes and C. Halliday. • * • The Cycle Club was granted permission to hold a sports meeting on the Domain on Labour Day, the proceeds of which will be devoted to a wireless installation for the Public Hospital. The Mayor reported that the; A. and P. Association secretary, Mr. R. V. Rennie, had intimated that the ground was not likely to be again re- | quired for show purposes. The board resolved to spend a sum of £lB in further improvements to the Domain.
