PENROSE RAILWAY YARDS
REMOVAL TO OTAHUHU It was mentioned by the president of the Papatoetoe Welfare League, Colonel S. J. E. Closey, at the annual meeting last evening, that the general manager of railways had advised him yesterday that it had been decided to transfer the Penrose repairdepot to Otahuhu. Some time ago the league had drawn the department’s attention to the suitability of Papatoetoe as a residential area, and in consequence of the latest report it was decided to ask th© department to go on with the matter of transferring the works as soon as possible. It would help to relieve the unemployed and would fit in with th© town-planning scheme. The chairman said that it would probably mean 270 workers being employed within one and a-half miles of Papatoetoe.
