Provincial Horses With Good Chances
TEN SELECTIONS FOR TROTTING SEASON Writing in appreciative terms of the policy adopted at the beginning of each trotting season by THE SUN of selecting a dozen candidates that promise to show good winning form, a correspondent writes asking if “Abaydos” would suggest half a dozen pacers and a similar number of trotters, owned and trained in the Auckland Province, that would be worth keeping an eye on this season. He asks that the selection if possible be made before the Auckland season commences in earnest this month. The writer previously dealt with a similar position, picking out 12 Dpminion pacers to follow, but will endeavour to name at least 10 in this province that are likely chaff-winners. The task is more difficult than it appears. In the first place the province possesses a great quota of hoppled merchants of all ages and qualifications, but when classing them sectionally there are many in each division on an equal footing. However, seven are mentioned as follow: The Pacers Commencing at the top of the pacers’ list Gold Jacket is entitled to the greatest respect, and the wonderful son of Gold Bell—Lady S. promises to gain further laurels, and among his scalps for the present season may be the New Zealand Cup. As an improver of the first water. Mountain Dell attracts attention, and the daughter of Blue Mountain King and Whispering Dell has only to continue on the right way to be among the society pacers at the end of the term. ' Arachne is another that threatens to reach a higher plane and the Logan Pointer mare should be a good stakeearner. The best has not been seen of Vendome, the daughter of Globe Derby and Lady Edith, .and she should be often in the picture this year. Now that Ena wah has shown a return to her better form, the Peterwah mare should soon work her way into higher society. Trustworthy is a consistent young- mare from whom some interesting displays can be looked for during the season just opened and her prospects appear rosy. Coming down to the tliree-year-old stage Great Parrish and First Flight appeal, and despite his recent failure, the Mangere colt should be worth keeping on side with. First Flight is a bonny-looking filly that seems sure to make a good one with more racing experience, and as Great Parrish has already been selected in the previous list, for New Zealand pacers, First Flight will be included here. The Trotters The difficulty in making a selection in the square-gaited department in the paucity of trotters of a high standard in this locality. There are some solid ones all right, but they have, by their last year’s successes, attained a mark for the new. season from which fheir job to win will be arduous. The young trotters are not far enough advanced yet to allow of a definite line being taken of thenfuture possibilities, so the choice is really confined to that section which is likely to show improvement that will spell success during the season. Owing to the present trotting shortage, only three square-gaiters will V»e chosen. Concerning the square-gaiters, the not over-raced and solid Waikaha must be respected and there is every reason to believe more will be seen of the Gold Bell trotter this year, which should indicate more stake money for his owner. Then Etta Coif is one of the most likely in the improving section to reach a high standard, and it will not be surprising to find her in the select society at Christmas. Despite her inglorious display at the recent Auckland special fixture Akenehi is one to be reckoned with and when properly tuned up the grey mare will make amends. Koro Peter is owned in Auckland, but trained in the South, otherwise he would be given a prominent place in the list, but with his stable mate. Bingen Starr, should add to his owner’s total this year. The reference list of provincial horses is as under:— Gold Jacket, Mountain Dell, Arachne, Vendome, Enawah, Trustworthy, First Flight (pacers), Waikaha, Etta Cole, Akeneh i (trotters).
