PRESENTS FOR LEPERS
ANNUAL APPEAL MADE PATIENTS HAVE MANY NEEDS Last year 700 European and native leper patients on the Makogai Station were cheered by gifts from sympathisers in the Auckland Province. Every year in the past the public has proved generous in this respect, and it is hoped that the appeal now being made will meet with a ready response. Clifts will be received up to the end of November by Mr. 13. L. Thomas, of 14 Domain Road, Mount Albert, who previously was associated with Dr. T. J. Hughes, medical officer of health. Mr Thomas is willing to collect gifts if he is notified by telephone. Dress materials for the women are of a particularly acceptable nature, and toys will bring happiness to the numerous young patients. Sweets, gramophone records, tobacco and pipes, fishing lines and hooks, and clothing are mentioned, but the needs are so many that almost any article will be acceptable. Twenty-five cases of presents were sent to the island from Auckland by the Tofua last year. The response was excellent and goods w?re received from even south of the province. It is hop* d to have an equally large supply of gifts ready for distribution among the patients by Christmas.
