“ROBBING THE POOR”
BISHOP MISUNDERSTOOD
“ONLY SPOKE JOKINGLY” From Our Own Correspondent HAMILTON, Friday. “Certain parts of my address have obviously been selected for comment either by Mr. Calder or by an Auckland reporter,” remarked Bishop Cherrington today in replying to the Rev. Jasper Calder’s reference to his criticism of church bazaars. The Bishop said it was quite evident Mr. Calder had seen only a garbled account of his address. When his Lordship used the words “robbing the poor,” he meant them to apply to the people who visited bazaars. In any case the term was an English colloquialism, and had been used jokingly. Moreover, lie had not referred to guilds as “gossip-shops” and “schools for scandal.” On the contrary, he had congratulated the devoted women who worked their fingers to the bone in the service of the church. He had made this quite clear. The Bishop added that he had nothing to withdraw about his opinion that sales of work were wrong in principle, and that direct giving was by far preferable.
