STRAWBERRIES SOON

CROPS DOING WELL cultivation at northcote The cultivation of strawberries is a big factor in the prosperity of the small landholders in the outer areas of Northcote. It is estimated that three-quarters of a million plants have been grown principally on what is known as the Gladstone block, and areas leased from the Auckland Hospital and Charitable Aid Board, and Roman Catholic endowments. The quality of the plants supplied to the growers this year is stated to be excellent, and the disease known as the red spider has not as yet made its appearance. The beds are at present being mulched with straw or rushes cut from the tidal areas and swamps, or pine needles. A few chips from lasts year’s beds have been marketed, and it is confidently asserted by growers that, with a continuance of the light rains, the new season’s crop will be available before the end of the month. The picking of the berries is performed by school children in the early morning and after school hours, and Is eagerly looked forward to by them, as good pickers can earn quite good money at this occupation.
