PIONEERS TO MEET

OLD COLONISTS’ REUNION MORE MEMBERS WANTED On October 10, 1842, the ship Duchess of Argyle and the barque Jane Clifford, arrived in the Waitemata and 600 pioneers .set eyes on the “silvery waters” for the first time, four months after leaving their native land. At the Town Hall next Thursday the New Zealand Old Colonists’ Association will hold a reunion celebrating the 87th anniversary of the arrival of the pioneer colonists by the ships Duchess of Argyle, Jane Gifford, Brilliant, OspreV, Louisa Campbell and other pioneer vessels. The executive of the association desires to get into touch with the many Aucklanders of both sexes who are eligible for membership, but have not enrolled. The only qualification is 50 years’ residence in New Zealand, and no entrance fee or subscription Is charged. A register book is kept by the association, in Which are recorded such personal particulars as date of arrival, or, in the case of the New Zealand-born, date and place of birth. It is felt that great numbers of names are missing from the record, which should be included. All eligible men and women are therefore invited to apply to the honorary secretary, Mr. S. Coldicutt, 6 Hellaby’s Buildings, opposite the G.P.O.

Thursday’s reunion will begin at 1.30 p.m. with a service conducted by Archbishop Averill, who will deliver an address. and the Rev. G. Budd, Moderator-Elect of the Presbyterian Church of New Zealand. The Mayor, Mr. G. Baildon, will preside, and the association’s choir will lead the singing.

The service will be followed by a concert, including community singing, and items by the choir. Later, supper will be provided for the old colonists in the supper room.
