Obituary

MR. JOHN McLEAN One of the oldest residents in Waipu, Air. John McLean, died yesterday at the age of 90. He came to New Zealand 70 years ago with the original band of immigrants, of which the Rev. Norman McLeod was leader. After spending a short time in Auckland apprenticed to a butcher. Mr. McLean proceeded North to join the Waipu settlers. He took up land there and settled in The district for the remainder of his life. MR. ROBERT ROSS With the death of Mr. Robert Ross at Topuni, one of the best known and respected of the early pioneers, a loss is experienced by the agricultural world. Born in Inverness. Scotland, he came to New Zeaßand with his parents in 1859. As a young man Mr. Ross took up cattle dealing. He was often seen in the agricultural show-rings, both as judge and exhibitor. In later year* he managed the 5.000 acres estate of the late the Hon. J. D. Ormond in the Topuni district. Mr. Ross, who was a groat horseman, spent the last day of his life in the saddle drafting a lin<* of 100 bullocks for the city market. He is survived by his wife and two children. MRS. J. D. OZANNE The death of Mrs. Kate Mary Ozanne. well-known in Auckland for her missionary work and keen interest in Anglican Church activities. occurred on Wednesday at her home in Tohunga Street, Parnell. Born in Ireland, she came to New Zealand with her parents when a child. She accompanied the Southern Cross to Norfolk Island, when the Melanesian Mission opened its chapel there, as a member of the visiting choir, and was persuaded to remain there as a missionary. While on the island she married the Rev. J. D. Ozanne. Later she accompanied her husband to England, when he was appointed vicar of Mossley, Congleton, Cheshire. Mrs. Ozanne travelled extensively after her husband’s death, returning to Auckland in 1915. She is survived by two sisters.
