TOMORROW’S RUGBY
REP. TEAM GOES TO THAMES JUNIOR GRADE GAMES A strong Rugby representative team has been selected to play Thames tomorrow. The team will leave by motor-bus from the Post Office at 13 o’clock tomorrow morning, returning the same evening. The only competition matches under the control of the Rugby Union set down for tomorrow are the second grade match, Ponsonby v. Grammar, and the fourth grade game. Manukau v. Ponsonby. Both games will be played on the Showgrounds Xo. 3. JUNIOR NOTES SEASON NEARS CLOSE The junior championship will be decided tomorrow between Ponsonby and Grammar, the winners of the A and B sections, respectively. On Saturday last, Ponsonby unexpectedly turned tables on Grafton, who a fortnight earlier soundly trounced Ponies. Winning the last game by a threepoint margin, Ponsonby became a finalist. The contest for the championship should produce some sparkling football, as both teams are partial to open tactics. Ponsonby will undoubtedly have a big advantage in weight and stature in the forwards, and have had the advantage of games during the past two weeks, whereas Grammar has had no matches. By making the play open, however. Grammar stands a good c-liance.
The will and determination to win gave Ponsonby the third intermediate grade championship for this season after an exciting and strenuously contested battle with Marist on Saturday. Sparkling with spectacular back movements, delightful to watch, the game was one of the brightest expositions of the code in the lower grades this season. Ponies owed their victory to tho wonderful vigour and dash of their forwards in the last quarter of an hour. Three points behind, with 15 minutes to go, Ponies’ pack literally smashed the Marist defence with irresistibly driving loose rushes, which brought the teams on level terms—ll points all. Although even a draw would have assured Ponies of the title they maintained a tireless attack, and a few minutes before time registered the match-winning try. Twenty teams participated in this grade, which was one of the largest in the competitions. The champions, Ponsonby, won ! 6 of the 17 games, and drew one. heading the list with 33 points. Marist, runners-up, scored 30 points, losing one out of 16 games. Suburbs also gained 30 points, winning 14 of the 18 matches, losing two and drawing two. North Shore and Otahuhu each had 29 points. By annexing the fifth grade championship on Saturdaj*. Ponsonby incidentally added the fifth title this season to its record. The final match with Marist proved that Ponies’ backs were overwhelmingly superior, the latter running up 21 points to nil. Up till Saturday both teams had each won 14 of the 18 games, lost one and drawn three. Ellerslie with 14 wins, three losses and a draw, -frith 29 points, was next on the ladder, followed by Manukau with 25.
With three teams, Grafton. Manukau and Technical Old Boys, all on level terms in the B section of the fourth grade, the championship contest is easily the most keenly contested of the lower grades. Otahuhu has been declared the winners of the A section. In the B section semi-finals Grafton has defeated Technical Old Boys, and Manukau, in turn, defeated Grafton. Tomorrow, Manukau and Technical Old Boys meet, and if the former wins the West Coasters will contest the championship with Otahuhu. In the event of Technical Old Boys winning, the leading teams in B section will be again on level terms.
