SOCIETY SAYS FAREWELL
ORCHESTRA LEADER HONOURED A farewell conversazione was held last evening in Scots Hall, by the committee and orchestra of the Auckland Amateur Operatic Society. The occasion was in honour of the founder and conductor of the orchestra, Mr. P. A. Richards, and Mrs. Richards, who leave tomorrow for Australia. An interesting programme had been arranged from light opera. Selections were splendidly given and much enjoyed by all present. During the evening Mr. A. C. Tucker presented Mr. Richards with a silver-mounted baton, with Air. Richards’s initials inscribed in gold. Air. Richards, in acknowledging the gift, gave interesting reminiscences of the notable musical conductors he had met and played under. The president of the society. Air. W. W. Bruce, also spoke. Supper was served at the conclusion of the evening.
MORRINSVILLE NOTES
The opening of the Morrinsville Baptist Tennis Club, held at the residence of Mr. and Mrs. E. McGregor on Saturday afternoon, took the form of a garden party, an enjoyable afternoon being spent, although the attendance was somewhat marred by the inclement weather. Air. Gage, of Auckland. in declaring the courts open for play, called on Airs. Garlick to serve the first ball over the net.
Among those present were:—Air. and Airs. E. AlcGregor, Rev. and Airs. Garlick. Air. and Airs. Amy, Airs. Jenkins, Airs. AlcKay, Airs. Valler, Mrs. Vincent, Airs. Riley, Alisses L. AlcKay, T'2. Baxter, L. Alitchel, D. Redshaw, and the Sunday school children.
WELCOME EVENING
A kitchen tea and welcome evening was accorded Air. and Airs. Schofield at the Brookfield HalE on Saturday night, when about 50 people gathered to welcome the newly-married couple. A large assortment of useful gifts was presented. Speaking on behalf of the residents, Air. X. J. Humphreys welcomed ATr. and Mrs. Schofield to the district, and wished them happiness in the future. Air. Schofield replied, expressing thanks on his own behalf and that of ATrs. Schofield for the generous gifts, which were much appreciated.
FAREWELL PARTY
All*, and Airs. Henderson, who are shortly leaving the Alorrinsville district, were the guests of honour at an enjoyable farewell party given by Mr. and Airs. Donald at their residence, Te Puninga, this week. Nearly sixty residents were present. A jolly evening was passed with games, dancing and musical items. Songs were sung by Alessrs. Spice and Goslen, Air. Blennerhassett and Mr. R. Patterson contributing recitations. Alusic for dancing was provided by Air. McDonald’s new radio, with gramophone pick-up attachment, which proved a great success. Air. French kindly lent the gramophone pick-up and operated it during the evening.
