FANCY DRESS BALL

TAUPIRI CHILDREN HAVE GAY PARTY Inclement weather and prevalence of sickness in the district accounted for the somewhat disappointing attendance at the children’s fancy dress ball arranged by the Taupiri branch of the Plunket Society. The Taupiri I-lali bad been effectively decorated with streamers, balloons, clematis and kowhai, making a pretty background for the children’s fancy dresses, which were attractive and original. Among those present in fancy dress were: Betty Wilson, who represented a Blackbird Pen; Cora Tapper, Fairy; Thora VI right, Sir Peter Teasel; Vera Sing, Spring; Mary Day, the Painted Doll; Connie Drinkwater, Queen of Diamonds; Kathleen Powell, Vale Blues; Fatty Ford, a Gipsy man; Joan Sow-man, Miss America; Lena Hutchinson, Pierette; Jean Richmond, Spring; Marie Vollemaere. Ruffles and Pompoms; Joyce , Sweeney, Persian Dancer; Mabel I-lutehin- ; son, Fluffy Ruffles; Gwynneth Powell, I Russian Sports Girl; Mavis Gaby, Bride; j Gordon Drinkwater, Pirate; Peter Wilson, 1 Policeman; Stanley Williams, Swagger; jack Wilson, Rev. Hitchup; Reg Powell, I Absent-Minded Professor; Frank Gaby, Bridegroom: Billy Waring, Court Gentleman; Hugh Eagleson, Swagger; Bruce MeXally and Ray McNally, Pierrots; Gordon Sing, a Turkish Prince. Following are the prize-winners:— Best Fancy Dress, for girl over 10: Joyce Sweeney. Best Fancy Dress, for boy over 10: Gordon Sing. Best under 10, girl: Marie VoUemaere. Best under 7, boy:. Billy Waring. Most Original Boy, over 10: Stanley Williams. Most Original Oil-], over 10: Betty Wilson. Most Original Boy, under 10: Jack Wilson. Special prizes went to the Bride and Bridegroom, Mavis and Frank Gaby. During the evening the chairman of the Taupiri School Committee, Mr. W. Wright, presented the certificates awarded by the New Zealand Amateur Swimming Association to those pupils of the Taupiri School who had qualified for them during last swimming season. For swimming 220yds: Willie Beverland, Richard Parata, Kenneth Rau, Matthew Parata, Phyllis Griffin, Joan Sowman, Vera, Mary and Cathy Gentry, Rangi George. Minnie Simon, Maggie Nepe, Margaret Parata. For 50yds: Dan Nepe, George Rau, Micky George, Gordon Drinkwater. Robert Cately, Harry Tapper, Roland Plugge, Gordon Sing, Stanley Williams, Willie Nepe, Stanley West, Thora Wright and Joan Hurst.
