A social event of inter- >t to the whole of the Central King Countrv occurred at Tauiharunui during the week in a farewell party to Mr. \V. Dement Thomas who. for the past six year*, has been superintendent of the Tautnarunui Secondary School, and who is recognised as one of the most successful educationists who has ever been stationed in this part of the province. At a gathering of teachers, parents ard pupils at the school on Friday. Mr. Thomas received a farewell that must [hove been convincing proof of the esteem in which he was held. Air. j 111. Lynskey. headmaster of the District High School, preside d. and oUm r ! speakers were Messrs. A. T. Drirfil School Committee chairman, a. 7 Ungmuir. Mrs. AI. Walker and tb*»* Rev. J. E. Ward, all of whom referred •in the highest terms to the guest s : qualities as a man and a teacher 1 Mr. Lynskey presented Mr. Thomas . with a handsome shaving outfit on ; behalf of the scholars, and Talbot j Grattan, speaking for his fellow students of Forms V. and VI., handed Mr. Thomas three beautifully-bound ‘ volumes of modern literature. Air. 1 Driifll. for the committee, parents, and ‘old pupils, stated that .. sum of money had been donated for the purpose of | making their guest a gift, and it was | tho desire of the donors that Mr. I Thomas should express a preference! when the money would be expended as jhe desired. In replying. the late \ master expressed the mixed feelings ! with which he did so and returned I sincere thanks on his own and Airs. i Thomas’s behalf for the warmth of the farewell tendered them. At a gathering of the school staffs. Air. Lynskey presented Air. Thomas with a smoker's outfit, other speakers being Messrs H Hill. 11. Pain and F. H. P. Rogers: During her stay in Taumarunui Mrs. Dement Thomas has been no less popular and respected than lier husband, and at a pleasant little afternoon at the residence of Mrs. T. AI. Peters, a number of intimate friend-' gathered to bid her farewell prior to her departure for Levin, whore Air. Thomas takes up a position in the secondary department of the District High School. At a pleasant social evening hold at tho residence of Air. ant. Mrs. Aiills. of Kakahi. the proceedings took the form of a euchre tournament in the interests of the Queen Carnival candidate. Miss F. Watkins. The proceedings were enlivened by a wireless programme, and the evening was voted very successful. The Hon. P. A. de la Pen t lie, Alinister of Internal Affairs, who visited Taumarunui on Saturday, was accompanied by liis sister. Airs. J. Niven, and cousin, Aliss Perth AlcLean; also Air. P. J. Kelleher. Assistant-Under-secretary of Internal Affairs and Chief Inspector of Totalisators. and Air. E. N- G. Poulton, the Alirister's private secretary. * * « A delightful dance was held at Otunui. following a novel and wellattended football match. for which Alesdamos White and Shield provided afternoon tea. The dance music was supplied by Aliss Hughes, of Taumarunui. and Aliss White and Master Rex Street, of Otunui. Air. Cunningham gave appreciated extras. During the evening Aliss Hughes contributed solos in her usual delightful manner. Organised in aid of the school funds, a very successful ball was held at Taringamutu. Mainly for the children. the early part of the evening presented a delightful picture, the many plain and fancy dresses making an ever-changing scene of colour. Prizes were given as follow*:—Girls. best fancy, Margaret McLennan; girls*, most original, Phyllis Rhodcwald: boys’, best fancy, John McLennan: boys’, most original, Fred Cleary. One of the largest crowds ever seen at a public ball in Alatiere attended the annual function arranged by the Catholic Church, a feature of the event being the excellent music provided by tho Merry Orchestra. Extras were played by Aliss P. McAvady and Air. D. Longley, the latter also filling the post of M.C. During the supper interval, Air. F. Pleasant handed to the winners trophies secured during the evening. Aliss Dalesfield, Air. J. Gordon, and Alaster W. Green were the successful competitors. The Alerry Three Orchestra supplied delightful music for the annual children’s plain and fancy dress ball at Rauriniu, and this in no small measure made the evening successful for the juvenile merrymakers. A guessing competition for a doll presented by Airs. Kendall was won by O. Remington, and the children winning costume prizes were: Girls. —Standards V. and VI.: Jean Camniock (Night), 1; L.
