AUCKLAND SPRING FIXTURE An Attractive Programme IT is doubtful if any spring racing carnival staged by the Auckland Racing Club promised better results than tliat scheduled to be held at Ellerslie tomorrow and on Monday. All the best horses are going to line up, so that there should be no lack of thrills for Turf devotees and admirers of the thoroughbred. Most of the events are very open in appearance, the two classic races in particular being apparently much more difficult to sum up than in recent years. The course is in splendid order and will provide the best of going. “Early. Bird's” final review of the fields for tomorrow is given below. 19 9 TRIAL HURDLES Of £400; 1J miles Golden Golden Wedding is a useful sort Harbour View 9 0 Wedding .. 10 0 -when right, and so too is Lady faster Loon 9 u Lady Spalpeen, who finished second to ' ' § o Sta? a of East ft 11 Keel Comet a fortnight ago. Walt- balr Abbej . 9 u zer can he looked for to set a torrid pace, and The Lamb is said to be a promising novice. Ah Wera went good races on the >Dannevirke, Marton and Wanganui circuit, and if any good at all be has his chance here. Farndon, Harbour View, Sleepy Sol. and Catonian are fair sorts. Sir Archie went a rattling race at Avondale for his first outing over the battens, and with that experience into him he can be regarded as a distinct possibility. However, it is probable-that the favourites will be: AH WERA and LADY SPALPEEN 1 ? 47 GREAT NORTHERN GUINEAS Of £1,500; 1 mile Kb-insr Even after making due allowance Mot ere • • • 8 10 Prince . . s ill f Ol . a number of those, left in this \ • 5 „ ! ve nerlal‘ ' ' SlO valuable three-year-old classic. Vallar 1 8 0 Benzora showed enough speed at Avondale to suggest Lady Quex . 8 5 him as a possibility, for obviously he was not brought High Finance S 2 North for nothing. Gold Money has lost all her dash, Havering . . 8 1 < and her work at Ellerslie this week confirms this view. A. war ere . . . i Vallar races well when fresh, and in the absence of an Kingfield ° y *7 4 outstanding sprinter may see it out. Lady Quex is unV’alue ..... 7 3 doubtedly the form horse of the race, for she had Eaglet Oration . . ." 7 1 stretched right out to beat her, and Silvermine was third. Billikins ... 7 0 Lady Quex displayed a lot of speed, and patiently ridden ftlon Star ..70 tomorrow she may go one better. High Finance should Polv\eiia a 7 0 130 nearl V ready, but it is more than likely that her TakaTakutama ! * 7 n nini trainer will pin his faith to the three-year-old PolyRoi de Val . . 7 0 xena, who is very speedy. Havering was unlucky to be beaten by Consent at Wanganui, and the Ellerslie course will be much more suitable for him. His defeat of Kick Off and Reremoana. in the light of subsequent results, was real good form. Awarere looks like coming back to form, for he beat all but White Fang at Avondale. Lady’s Boy is at bis best, and Kingfield is a likely improver. Value ran two solid races the other day. and she may be hard to head off. Oration and Billikins are possibilities, and of those at the bottom a good word can be said for To Atiawa, Takutama and Roi de Val. Such an open race should produce a wide range in the market, in which the most fancied two-will be: LADY QUEX and VALUE O 97 MITCHELSON GUP U.LI Of £1,250; V 2 miles Star Stranger 9 11 The big race of the day forms the Transformer . 7 11 Historic ... 9 7 subject of a special article, in which High Pitch . 710 prince * t the chances of each horse are dis- Desert Glow. «10 Prodice hiey 'S *9 cuß ?® d \ At P. r ® sent . Star Stranger and Historic have big weights, especially the latter: Star Stranger can carry his, but the chestnut has yet to prove himself at both weight-carrying and staying. This rather leaves Prodice (second to Historic at Avondale) and Prince Humphrey (fourth in the same race) at the head of the possibles. Most preferred are Prince Humphrey and Prodice, but if the latter is not started on account of the hard track the favourites will be: PRINCE HUMPHREY and HISTORIC O 7 HUNTERS’ STEEPLECHASE Of £400; about 2X miles Odin it 2 There are several proficient jumpers among the 14 Pompeius . . 10 7 carded, and twice over the hill will find some of them out. Mashoor ... 01l . as well as assisting to eliminate the careless fencers. rtj^ emet - Odin’s weight may find him out. Pompeius has been Ray omi ant ’ 9 5 made to pay dearly for his Pakuranga Hunt Cup vicTown * tory, for he has gone up a stone and a-half, which should Rambler . 9 8 test him fully. He won very easily five weeks ago, and Soami ... 9 2 as he is improving he should again be difficult to beat. • • • •} J Mashoor schooled splendidly the other morning. At the Foxhound 16 9 0 Pakuranga meeting Sea Comet had two races for a first Tin Whistle. 9 0 and a second., and as he was beaten by Pompeius on the Lucess . . . 9 0 latter occasion his form was good. Cali the impresses Stonewall . ! 9 0 one as a 'chaser full of possibilities, but he may do better with a bit more experience over the hill. Rayonnant and Town Rambler are good jumpers, and Soami can be labelled dangerous, for she has improved out of all knowledge. King Fame finished fourth in the last Great Northern Steeplechase, and he certainly has a chance here. Foxhound and Marita may be the pick of the remainder. The favourites will probably be: POMPEIUS and SEA COMET 9 C? WELCOME STAKES Of £1,000; 5 furlongs Chief Link . . s 5 There will he quite a big 1 field to Protornint . . S s RU oTe? S 0 Appeal . . ..85 being at very cramped odds when he scored a bloodless victory. The only winners engaged are Lineage and Royal Ruler, and those with placed performances are Chrysology, Imamint, Isa and Lady Court. The market promises to be very open on this occasion, with, the Appeal-Lineage bracket, Chief Link. Chrysology, Cylinder, Oil King, Royal Ruler, and Isa all holding pronounced chances. Perhaps the most favoured in a difficult race will be: ROYAL RULER, CYLINDER and LINEAGE A 07 GORDON HANDICAP Of £400; 1 mile Arikitoa ... 9 0 A big field is to contest the only Takuranga . 7 0 Sea Cob ... Good Boy is fast coming back to form. Prince Val is a vastly improved hack, and there was real merit in his two Avondale wins, particularly on the second day. He is now right up in the weights. Indolent was a disappointment at the suburban meeting. Some Lady is an honest performer, and so is Calithe. Brampton was very unlucky at Avondale, and if he repeats that form will be dangerous to those higher up the list. Alloy impressed in his only run at Avondale, when he was badly left and finished close up to the placed division. Rod Lion was a winner on the other side, and Currajong'showed up in a trial at Ellerslie last Tuesday. Clopton will need to improve on his last performance, and that race was probably just what he required. In a. good pool most money may be forthcoming for: ARIKITOA and SEA COB q 99 FLYING HANDICAP Of £500: 7 furlongs GreaT Char ter 8 I The Sood horse at the top, Here- SwnemSri' !7 I Luc-y Rose . Lucy Rose showed a Hash of her old form last week, and so too did Flying Juliet, who was right behind the placed horses in the sprint the second day at Avondale. In the Shade is going down in the weights, but perhaps he is not at his best yet. Maori Boy can be depended upon for another honest effort, and he is capable of turning the trick. Mervette, having her first race for some time, was noticed putting in a strong run at the finish of a sprint at Avondale, and is a dangerous candidate. Otairi has been racing consistently through the, winter, and King Emerald's fine gallop yesterday shows that he has possibilities at the meeting. Standfast is improving. Oliinemuri goes fast, and Merry Mint has a chance to reproduce his three-year-old form. Mithra, Roi de Val, The Lover and Bennie are well. The favourites may be: REREMOANA and KING EMERALD
