Historic Does the Best Mitchelson Cup Trial

Silvermine’s Brilliant Sprint

THERE were several interesting work-outs at Ellerslie this morning, during the final gallops for the Auckland meeting on Saturday and Monday, noteworthy being the defeat of Star Stranger by Historic and a smart six furlongs by Silvermine.

The course proper, with the pegs 35 feet out. was in excellent order, and provided splendid going. The times recorded in the majority of instances were on the slow side, few of the horses being ridden out in their work. Kawainga was going nicely with Thursbv at the close of six furlongs in 1.20 3-5, the last half-mile occupying 53 3-5. Kawainga is beginning to show signs of improvement. Brampton and AA’ar Officer. both under pressure, completed five furlongs in 1.5 2-5, with the former going better well clear. They cut out the first quarter in 26. Brampton worked pleasingly. A smart half-mile went down to the credit of Alloy, who was partnered by Bombarder. They ran the initial furlong in 12 1-5. and finished the journey in 50 4-5. with Alloy in the Nan and going well within himself. King Emerald Speeds Up A fine performance w„as registered by King Emerald over five furlongs. In company with Eager Rose, Gold Money and Respirator, they were in fairly close order to the home turn, where Eager Rose, who had the inside running, went away. King Emerald finished best, however, and was a shade in front passing the post, with Gold Money a moderate third and Respirator farther back. They covered the first furlong in 12 1-5, and came home over the last four in 51 3-5, leaving the five behind in a lively 1.3 3-5. It was a splendid effort on the part of King* Emerald, while Eager

Rose showed some improvement on recent efforts, with Gold Money again disappointing. The Lover was well clear of Palmares over the same jpurney, taking 1.4 3-5, the first two being cut out in a slick 25. Chief Link was not pushed to finish with Cylinder at the end of four furlongs in 50 2-5, the last three in 37 2-5. Both could have done better if required. Cup Horse Gahops Talisker, who claims an engagement in the Mitchelson Cup, in which he has the light weight of 7.1, was sent once round with J. Barry in the saddle. Timed from the old mile post, he left the first quarter behind in 26 3-5, the half-mile in SG, and the five in 1.9 2-5. He travelled nicely over the final half-mile in 55 3-5, without being hustled at any part, and returned 1.51 3-5 for the mile. He looks in nice order for his Cup* engagement. His stable mate, Vertigern, looking big* and muscular, was confined to a couple of rounds on number three grass at a strong* threequarter pace, sprinting* the final three furlongs in 43. Vertigern may be given a run in the Handicap on Monday. AATthout being asked to make time, Corinax went a round in 2.14 4-5. Promising Youngsters Lineage and Appeal were not out ! after time when they ran five furlongs ! easily, the last three taking* 42. Lineage looks all the better for his successful outing at Avondale. Oil King was doing* much better than Trickle over four furlongs in a smart 50 1-5. hitting out very freely. Red Lion was going freely alongside Taneriri, with Hannibal a couple of lengths back, at the end of five furlongs in 1.4 4-5. the last three taking 30 4-5. 4 Reremoana Impresses That Reremoana has lost little of his dash he showed by the easy manner in Avhich he accounted for Te Atiawa and Benzora in a spin five furlongs. They took 1.5 2-5 for the trip, with the final half-mile cut | out in 52 1-5. Te Atiawa was clear [at the furlong-post, but Reremoana, j without apparent effort, soon collared him and was in front passing the I post, going very easily. Benzora was ! not asked to do much, being eased I in the. straight. He looks very well. ! Myola, who may be seen out on | Monday, sprinted half a mile in a i comfortable 53 1-5. ! Lady’s Boy and Bennie shaped nicely in defeating Mountain Guide in I their task, which was one over three i furlongs, left behind in 38 3-5. Lady’s | Boy and Bennie were both under a ! hol'd, both exhibiting plenty of dash. Useful Effort Merry Mint (heavily Ijandaged on both forelegs) and Standfast were sent five furlongs, running the first in 13 3-5 and the last four in 50 2-5, making the full time 1.4. It was a nice work-out, with Merry Mint pleasing Singleton ran seven furlongs alone in 1.35, and Manawhenua and AA’ild Country covered half a mile in 52 2-5. Golden AVedding went fast over six furlongs, recording 1.18 1-5, but she was tiring at the finish. Nevertheless it was a good gallop and the chestnut should go well in the Hurdles I on Saturday. Roi de Val, who looks particularly j well, was sent five furlongs with | Knightlike in 1.4 4-5, time which both I could have bettered. Classic Candidates Two Great Northern Guineas candidates in Hunting Cry and False Scent made a great impression by the manner in which they executed their task of a mile from the new barrier. The first furlong took 14. the two 26 -i-5, half-mile 53 2-5, and they came

home over the last four furlongs easily in 53, making 1.46 --5 for the journey, time which they could have improved upon considerably. Hunting Cry is not a good looker, but he certainly can gallop. False Scent really did his final gallop when he reeled off a sensational sis: furlongs at Avondale on Tuesday.

From the same barrier Amor and Leader jumped off. Timed from the seven furlongs, they ran the first quarter in 23 1-5, and the half-mile in 52 o-3, the seven occupying 1.34

1-5. Amor beat his companion by a good margin. Leader makes a noise when ho gallops, and he al3o appears to have gone off a bit. A Good Trial It was close to breakfast time before Star Stranger and Historic put in an appearance on the track. Their task was a round, .the distance being nine furlongs and 70 yards, but with the pegs out they would have to go a good deal farther than that in actual distance. They got away on terms, cantering up from the mile and a-quarter post, and they kept together until practically a furlong from home. When the bit of pressure was applied Historic began to draw away, but he was not to have a bloodless victory, for Star Stranger stuck to him doggedly. However, Historic was not to be denied and he crossed the line half a length to the good. The time, 2.5 1-5, was really good, and that they cut out the last half-mile in 52 3-5 showed that they were travelling over the part that matters. Loth Star Stranger and Historic carried feather-weights, and on Saturday they will probably have an additional couple of stone to carry. At the same time they will also have good horsemen aboard. Going strictly on this morning’s effort Historic can be said to have impressed most. Silvermine’s Sprint Silvermine had Pink Coat as a companion in a spin home from the sixfurlong peg. The first furlong took 13 4-5, and the quarter 26, the pair coming home from there in 51 4-5, making 1.17 4-5 for the six furlongs. Silvermine appeared to be doing it on the bit throughout, whereas the three-year-old was under pressure over the final furlong. Pink Coat did not impress nearly so much as he did on Tuesday. The hurdler Gold Rep galloped a round, running the last mile in 1.54 After Breakfast Bizarro and Diamond Queen covered the last three furlongs of their work in 40 1-5. Onewhero was doing better than Luxurious when this pair slipped over half a mile in 51 1-5. and Spring Abbey and Measurer were practically together at the end of five in 1.6. F. Davis sent his two-year-old. Chrysology, four furlongs, which were carved out in 50 1-5, the first furlong J in 11 3-5. This son of Physology' and Desert Gold is a nice mover, and gets through his work in pleasing fashion. Sir Archie encompassed a round in 2.8 3-5, and was travelling strongly on the post. Pulled Up Lame For five furlongs at three-quarter pace Great Charter recorded 1.15 2-5, but he was not hitting out with his usual dash and pulled up lame. His prospects at the meeting are not bright. Some Lady strode out usefully over six furlongs in 1.21 4-5. and ran the first two in 27 2-5, and three in 40 2-5. Tremetus, Raff light and Trespis ran three furlongs' in 38 4-5, the lastnamed doing better at the end. Two Mitchelson Cup candidates who made a. fine showing over a mile were Prodice and Desert Glow, both from the same stable. They were together all the way and got over the first furlong a trifle slow —13 1-5, but the pace was then increased, and they wound up the first three in 38 1-5, and the last five in 1.7 2-5, making 1.45 1-5 for the trip—good time in comparison with other candidates sent over the same ground. For six furlongs Good Boy ran 1.20 3-5, doing it impressively, too. Spring j Song ran away from Thais and an- \ other two-year-old at the conclusion I of four furlongs in 52 1-5. A Good Seven ] Flying Prince accounted for Arikii toa and Cybele over seven furlongs in j 1.32 4-5. and he appeared to do it well. The first three furlongs oc- ' cupied 38 4-5. j A Shorts Handicap candidate who i attracted notice by showing plenty of • speed over three furlongs was Value, who had the two-year-old Valmarie i to accompany her. Although ridden i over the last furlong to hold _ off the youngster and register 36 3-5. Value impressed, and on this effort she should be prominent for part of the journej" in the big six. Formerly Value has not shown too much stamina at the end of her races, but her winning effort at Avondale indicated that she has improved to some extent in this respect. Valmarie, too, is a promising juvenile, and must stand a chance in the Welcome Stakes, for he struggled on gamely. A number of other horses were worked, but their times were slow. Master Doon (McNeil) and Kamehamelia (Brady) got through a schooling task over four hurdles satisfactorily. and restricted to a couple Sleepy ! Sol (Stanway). made no mistakes. although he would have jumped better | with more pace on. Chesterman S (Brady) got over two slowly.
