WATER BOARD’S SUGGESTION

DISCUSSION AT TAKAPUNA “Takapuna is being- throttled as the result ot the control by an outside body of its fares and time-tables. This signal failure in transport should warn us against handing over other major public services to an outside authority.” With these words, Mr. L. 11. Titchener warned the Taka puna Borough Council last evening against the centralisation of water, drainage, refuse collection and transport services of the four North Shore boroughs suggested in a letter received from the North Shore Water Board. The Mayor, Mr. J. W. Williamson, said that the Water Board was constituted on a population basis, the present ratio being, Devonport, two members, Northcote, Takapuna and Birkenhead, one member each. He'considered this a fair ratio of representation. However. it was purely for the purpose of dealing with the water supply question that the board had been constituted. Mr. J. Guiniven contended that the Water Board’s suggestion should be iaid before the proposed conference concerning amalgamation of the four North Shore boroughs. The question transport should not be decided by **ne borough, as at present, but should be under joint control. Further discussion was deferred for ci fortnight- !
