FAREWELL DANCE

JOLLY SOCIAL EVENING AT POKENO SEVERAL PRESENTATIONS After a period of 32 years as head master of the Pokeno School, and 47 years’ service in the teaching profess sion. Air. G. Lippiatt has retired t « reside at Manurewa. 10 At a farewell function tendered to Air. and Airs. Lippiatt there was ample evidence that they were held i n the highest esteem by a wide circle o' friends, for over 400 foregathered at Pokeno to bid them au revoir. Airs. Lippiatt was presented with a bouquet by little Jean Ryburn. The chairman of the school committee, Mr Donald AlcPherson, explained the purpose of the gathering. He was followed by Alessrs. H. C. Walden. R. Alunro, S. P. Pendergrast, J. Dean and Noel Gummer. The speakers referred to the prominent part the guests of honour played in the welfare of the district, and especially Mrs Lippiatt’s services during the influenza epidemic of 3918. Air. Lippiatt was presented with a grandfather clock and Airs. Lippiatt with a gold wristlet watch. Dance music was supplied by the Kit Kat Orchestra. Among those present were: Airs. Mcßobbie, Airs. A. WELCOME TO NURSES LYCEUM CLUB RECEPTION The committee and members* of the Lyceum Club welcomed members of the New” Zealand Trained Nurses’ Association and delegates attending the annual conference of the association in Auckland this week at a reception held in the clubrooms on Tuesday. Bowls of crimson rhododendrons and beautiful cherry blosscm decorated the lounge, where Mrs. AV. Parkes, president, received the guests. The tables in the supper room were arranged with Iceland poppies and other spring flowers.

All were proud of that sisterhood which devoted itself to the relief of suffering, saJd Airs. Parkes. The high standard which had been reached in New Zealand was most gratifying. She felt sure that still greater efficiency would be achieved in the future. Two playlets were produced by Airs. Scantlebury, “In the Right,” which was written by Aliss Alarie Gaudin, was played by Aliss Gaudin, Airs. Hobday. and Aliss Vera Ziman. Aliss Joy Bartley and Aliss Estelle Verran took part in “The Young Idea,” a play by Herbert Swears. An enjoyable programme of vocal and instrumental numbers included a pianoforte duet by Aliss O’Leary and Air. Eric Bell, “The Dance of the Plum Blossom Fairy”: a violin solo by Aliss Helen Gray, “Mazurka” (Borowski); song, Aliss Patricia AlcLeod, “The Gipsy and the Bird”; a pianoforte solo, Aliss Jean Clarkson, “Ballade in G Minor” (Chopin); and a song by Aliss Mina Caldow. All items received encores. The accompanists were Mr. Eric Bell, Aliss Jean Clarkson, and Airs. Prime. WHIST DRIVE FOR BOWLING CLUB FUNDS A most successful whist drive was held in the Palais Theatre, Nortncote, on Tuesday, being the first of a series to be held in aid of the AVaitemata Bowling Club’s funds. The prize-winners were Alessrs. E. Bailey and X. R. Shorter, afld Mrs. C, Arblaster and Nurse Hands. Consolation prizes were awarded Aliss P. Sutherland and Air. R. Brinsden. Prizes were also presented to Air. Geo". Overbury and Airs. J. Daly, who obtained the highest number of progressives in the last session held.
