Speed-Cycling on Road and Track

_ By

“CYCLOS.”

THE CASH RIDERS Yet another Hamilton-Auckland road race has been decided by the Auckland Cycle Club. Of the 26 who started off over the S 7 miles, 22 completed the distance. This speaks well for the arrangements made by the officials of the club. Of course, in all long-distance road races the honour must go to the competitor securing fastest time. This was Jim Harcourt, of Hamilton. Jim has been training steadily for this event, for every wek-cnd he came to Auckland, competed iin the local club’s race, then rode home again for exercise. His usual rides on his own took about four and a-quarter hours. His time on Saturday, 3h 49m 575, was a good effort. He broke the record by nearly one hour.

Winner of the race was G. Hall (34m). Members will remember him last season scoring three wins on end. He won rather comfortably last week, having about 8m to spare at the finish. His “cut” includes £ls in cash, Dunlop Challenge Cup, Monarch cycle, gold medal, and £2 cash for first rider home on Dunlop tyres. F. Taylor (25m), a convert from the amateur ranks, was second. With his co-markers, he put in some good work, coming on nicely at the finish. He is certainly a good long-distance cyclist, and an asset to the pro. ranks. Third and second fastest time went to W. Francis. He invariably is at his best over this course, for every year he has competed lie has performed creditably. Francis stole a march on Harcourt when he sprinted up the latter’s blind side, to beat him for third placing. Mesdames G. Knight, W. Knott and H. Tonkin are friends to whom all riders are greatly indebted. .After the gruelling race the refreshments provided were indeed acceptable. The race next week will be a 13. S mile handicap event. With three members on terms for second and within striking distance of the leader, for the points cup, the last three races will be watched with interest. SATURDAY’S HANDICAPS The following handicaps have been declared by Mr. G. Knight for the Auckland Cycle Club’s 13. S miles road race, starting at Mangere Bridge at 2.45 p.m. on Saturday:—S. Hayes, J. Lindop, J. Harcourt, F. Prior, scr.: K. Mathieson, W. Francis, lmin; F. Potto.!*, D. Storey, G. Hall, lmin SOsec: F. Taylor, D. Fletcher, 2min: X. Healey, L. Pinfold. R. Clarke. W. THE AMATEURS Last week-end, when the Alanukau Amateur Cycling Club held its 22mile event, there was a fair muster of 29 contestants. Of these, only a dozen completed the distance. The overhead conditions were ideal, although a strong southerly wind was in evidence. * * * The winner last Saturday was C. G. Galbraith (2m. 50s). This constitutes his first victory this season. I-Ie was not extended over the final stages. His finishing effort was a glimpse of h is old form. A brother to Club-captain Casey, Norman Casey (sm) was second. Riders will remember that he had an accident on College Hill, which put him out of the game for some time. He rode with good judgment to gain second honours. # au * Still another outsider was in third berth. This was A. Mackrell (5m 30s). His third was his first placing since July last. A game little pacer, he deserved his success. Hen Dwight, who has been a model of consistency this season, gained fastest time honours. His lead for the Kohn Cup was further advanced. It looks well within his keeping now. * e u In the junior contest the medal presented by Air. C. Paul was won by R. Francis, who also gained second place. It was rather a surprise, as Leatherby (virtual scratch) was looked upon as a | “good thing - .’’ The winner was AV. C. Paul. This was his third win this season. A keen cyclist, he rides with good judgment. Pie should gain further laurels. On Saturday the annual race for the Cotter Cup will be held. The distance of the event will be over 17 miles. The juniors will again hold their usual Di-mile event. SATURDAYS HANDICAPS The Alanukau Amateur Cycling Club will hold a junior race of 5i miles, and a senior race of 17 miles, at Mangere Central on Saturday afternoon.
