RACE BACK TO PORT
FIREMAN INJURED ON KAIRANGA
HAD PASSED TIRITIRI
Severe injuries received by a fiveman, as the result of falling down an engineroom companionway, necessitated the return to port of the Union Company’s steamer Kairanga at 10.45 last evening, about five hours after her departure for Gladstone, Queensland. The vessel was well past Tiritiri on her way down the Hauraki Gulf when the fireman, Mr. E. Harman, fell down the companionway steps and received injuries to his hip and ankle. The injured man was in such paiu that Captain J. Bruce decided to return to port, and sent a wireless message to that effect, and requested a doctor to be In attendance.
The Kairanga steamed at full speed back to Auckland, and upon arrival was met by Dr. G. Russell, port health officer, and an officer from the St. John Ambulance wharf station, who went out in a launch to where the vessel was anchored. The tricky task of lowering the man into the waiting launch was safely accomplished, and he was removed to the Auckland Hospital by the St. John Ambulance.
Mr. Harman’s injuries are severe, aud it is feared that his hip may be broken, as well as having internal injuries. His condition this morning is reported to be satisfactory. A fireman was immediately engaged to replace the injured man. and the Kairanga made another departure at 12.45 this morning.
