CHIDE AGAIN

HOYLAKE TREATED LIKE A COMMON HACK GUINEAS CANDIDATES GO WELL (Special to TUB SUX) CIIRISTCHURCH. Tuesday. Chide, joint favourite with Historic for the New Zealand Cup, put up a really remarkable gallop at Riccarton this morning. With II oy lake as a companion, he ran ten furlongs on No. 6 grass in 2.10 4-5. The pair set a terrific speed in the early stages, but at the three furlongs Chide left his companions and came on to win finally by half a dozen lengths. It was a performance that stamped Chide as a galloper of exceptional merit, and, unbeaten at his last live starts, the indications are that some day he will rank among New Zealand’s best gallopers. Track work, in conjunction with public form, leaves little doubt concerning his prowess. It was in the early hours that Chide put up his great Cup trial, and as the track was slower then than after the breakfast hour, the importance of his gallop is very apparent. Both horses started off at a brisk pace, and for the first two furlongs occupied 24 4-5. They maintained this solid speed, getting to the half in 49 4-5, fivo furlongs in 1.3, six in 1.15 4-5. and seven in 1.29 2-5. It was here that Chide began to draw away. Entering the straight, he increased his advantage to a couple of lengths, but the nearer he approached (lie post the greater his advantage became, till at the end lie was at least six lengths clear of his associate. A Great Trial Of course, Hoy lake was conceding at least a stone to Chide, but even had the weights been equal it is probable the result would have been the same. Today’s great track trial was one of the best recorded at Riccarton for a long time, and it shows that Chide is in great fettle for his New Zealand Cup engagement. In all his gallops to date he lias seemed to be going easy at the end. no matter what horse he has travelled with, but the way be beat off the English horse this morning put the hallmark on his galloping ability. Since the Cup weights were declared many prominent figures in the racing world have openly declared that Chide would win the New Zealand Cup, and though ho has yet to be thoroughly tried as a stayer, his trainer, G. Murray Aynsley, has no fears about his running two miles. He shapes like a real stayer, and he is such a fine dispositioned galloper that no journey seems to find him out. In the Cup the four-year-olds, Prince Humphrey and Nightmarch, are both set to concede Chide big weights, and as the Paladin gelding trainer says that Chide would have won a Derby but for going wrong, it seems as if those performers have a very difficult task ahead to beat him. " Chide’s Cup Weight is 7.4. and as that impost represents 241 b. under weight-for-age he must have a wonderful chance in next month’s big event. Promising Youngsters Over four furlongs Spoon led The Geisha in 51 1-5. As the pair hopped away from a standing start it was a capital effort. Swoopalong and Quarterdeck ran seven furlongs in 1.34 4-5, Disorder and Sudden Storm recorded 1.18 for six furlongs, and for their half-mile sprint Aberfeldy and Gala Day occupied 53 1-5. Starsliooter left six furlongs behind in 1.18. Meprisant was given an easy gallop over seven furlongs. He did not overexert himself, being a lazy worker, but he covered that distance in the good time of 1.32 4-5. It was a pleasing performance and he gallops so evenly that it is evident that he is going to stay a mile at least. Gocd Rider Engaged

His Dunedin Guineas prospects now appear very bright, and he would need only to record a few fast gallops to sta.rt one of the favourites for the Wingatui classic. B. IT. AI orris lias been engaged to ride him, and that horseman also will be on Chide in the Mosgiel Handicap. A pleasing gallop was that of the Guineas candidates Comique and Desert Song, who left seven furlongs behind in 1.32 3-5. There was nothing between the pair at any stage, but at the end Comique was a shade in front. Comique raced at the Ashburton meeting last month, and though she missed a place in her engagement at that fixture it is evident that the gallop cleaned her up. She looks an improved fillv now, and with another race at Dunedin this month she should be a fit mare to contest the New Zealand Oaks, a race in which she is bound to play a prominent part. Dutch Money also pleased this morning. She ran five furlongs in 1.4 3-5, but was not extended at the finish. Recently she suffered from an abscess on the jaw. but she is all right again. For Australia Great Star was on the track, but he was restricted to an easj 7- six, which lie covered in 1.26. Owner J. H. Prosser is dissatisfied with the weight allotted the Solferino gelding for recent engagements, and he may plan a trip to Australia for the New Y ear. If he does go over, he will race Great Star at the autumn meetings at Sydney, and will stay at IJandwick over the winter. Over five furlongs, Silve.r Paper, with a light-weight in the saddle, registered 1.4 2-5. Haze ran seven furlongs in 1.34. He was joined by Fresh Breeze at the six, and the pair finished practically on terms at the end. Gleetiian and Pixie Gold ran three furlongs in 38, and Subdivision’s five furlongs took 1.5 2-5. Rapier Striking Form A striking seven-furlong gallop by Rapie.r, who was with Count Cavour during that journey, shows that the Greyspear horse has derived a good deal of benefit from the two races he had at Geraldine last week. They registered 1.32 4-5, but the time did not indicate the value of the performance. Rapier was two lengths clear of the Count at the end. and appeared to hold something in reserve. Te Awhina. Safety, and Night Dew ran five furlongs, but Te Awhina, who gave her companions a start, was an easy winner. She registered 1.5 2-5, which was a good effort. Royal Stanley and Grand Acre slipped over three furlongs in 3S 2-5. and for four furlongs Flair occupied 50 4-5. It. was a smart gallop on the part of the Psychology filly, and her future race prospects appear bright. She is to contest the Dunedin Guineas, but so far no rider has been engaged for her. Red Heckle was galloped five furlongs, and did his work well. Foalings Reported Air. J. Low, stud groom at Mr. G. AI. Currie’s Koatanui stud, reports the following foalings:—lnland, bay colt by Limond: Tukia, dead filly by Limond; Oreum, brown filly by Psychology; Rose Queen. bay filly by Thespian; Motley, chestnut filly by Lomond; Damaris, chestnut filly by Thespian; Veil, bay colt by Pombai; Aspic, bay colt by Limond: White Tulip, bay colt by Grand Knight: Makepeace, brown filly by Limond: Glimpse, brown filly by "Shambles; Homage, bay colt by Pombai.
