Empire Trade Week Empire Trade Week was opened in Wanganui today. All business people are making special window displays of goods made within the Empire. A big display by tradesmen will also be made in the Hrill Hall this evening and the business area will be brilliantly illuminated. * * * F«> urteen Burglary Charges Leonard Edward Smith pleaded not guilty in the New Plymouth Magistrate's Court today to 14 charges of breaking, entering and theft. He was committed to the Supreme Court. The hearing of the cases occupied two and a-half days. Bail was allowed in his own surety of £3OO and two sureties of £ISO.—P.A. ... Horahora Fatality An inquest was held by Mr. H. A. Bell, J.P., this morning concerning the death of Mr. George Middleton, farmer, Horahora, who was found shot on his farm on Tuesday morning'. A verdict was returned that Mr. Middleton died from a rifle wound, self-inflicted, while in a state of temporary unsound, mind. Life-Saving Accident When the Salvation Army Girl Guides were holding a life-saving' practice at the central fire station in Wanganui oil Monday evening the instructress, Miss Mona Watson, was injured. She jumped from a window into a sheet and, in landing, turned her foot, breaking her ankle and dislocating her knee. No Income-Tax Returns In the New Plymouth Magistrate's Court today George G. Newell, Alexander Galloway, George M. Galloway, S. E. Neilson and Sydney R. Lovell were each fined £2 and costs, £1 11s, for failure to furnish income-tax returns. All had failed to send returns for some years, necessitating default assessments being made.
