HANGING IN MID-AIR
NICOLA ESCAPES FROM STRAIT-JACKET
display in civic square Five thousand people watched Nicola, the "Emperor of Magic,” free himself from a strait-jacket strapped in place by a burly policeman on the Civic Square at midday today. Typists and office boys jostled their employers in the close-packed throng that swayed to and fro around the Auckland Fire Brigade’s 80ft extension ladder from which the magician was to be suspended. Every point of vantage on the roofs of nearby buildings, on the scaffolding surrounding the new block in the Civic Square, and even on the swaying tops of noticeboards was crowded shortly after noon. It was not until nearly 1.40 p.m.. however, that the "Emperor of Magic” appeared on the scene, followed closely by a messenger with a regulation strait-jacket. The ladder was run out and Nicola, apparently helpless, his ankles fastened together was hoisted aloft feet first. Three’ minutes later the jacket slipped over his head and he was free. His escape was well applauded by the crowd. A collection was taken up in aid of Jasper Calder’s City Mission funds.
