GOLF CHAMPIONSHIPS

AUCKLANDERS DO WELL IN the foursomes MOSS AND MORPETH FAIL (Special to THE SU2>) Monday. More in the nature of relaxation than serious contests, the amateur and professional foursomes championships commenced today in beautiful iveather. In the early morning a gentle, easterly breeze blew, changing later to prevailing north-westerly. On the whole, t he course was good, though some greens were inconsistent, playing fast n d slow in different sections. Despite the easy nature of the contest, splendid golf was witnessed. and several excellent cards were returned. Rutter and Fuller, with 74 and 73, had four threes and a two in the first round, and a three and a two in the second. Both played equally well, and, as can be seen from the figures, there were some beautiful shots. With a total of 1-17, the next nearest 1., ng 136, their positions as leaders in he professional championship was assured early in the afternoon. Smith, jun., of Auckland, coupled with Reilley, of Patea, bettered his morning's score of 79 by four strokes, olacing the pair at the top of the amateur list, ahead of A. X). S. Duncan and D O. Whyte. 73 and 80, and Kapi Tareha and Kuru. 76 and 86. Their afternoon card included three threes. Moss. the Auckland professional, living with Perry, footed the list with St and S 3. It was poor play, after his open championship effort on Saturday. Douglas, another Auckland professional. topped him with two 81’s. Rutter’s fine performance was done nracticallv without error, and without Hs own clubs. Dator in the day, Duncan and Whyte gave place to Chong and Clrey, followed by Black and Black, with Goss and Morpeth fourth. The latter pair, with a consistent first and second round of 79. had several misfortunes. On one occasion, Morneth's drive was bunkered, and Cross ifted It out and into another bunker. « the ninth hole. Morpeth pulled out "of bounds, and the hole was done in a noor six. From then on. several visits were made to bunkers. Two short putts at the last two holes were badly missed. Although some good golf was played, there was nothing spectacular orexeiting. Despite the comparative failure of its three cracks, Auckland nevertheless furnished a co-winner in each section. It was Fmith’s first championship, and he has started particularly well. Rutter is practically a stranger to Nett Zealand, although ho has played a lot in England and South Africa. Results are as follow: AMATEUR FOURSOMES W B Roillv and B. T. Smith, jun., first ' round. A proposal brought forward by Mr. p- c. Fryer, on behalf of the Parkvale Club, to amend the New Zealand Golf Association’s rules to provide for the setting up of district associations, created a lively discussion at the annual conference of the association this evening. Mr. Fryer also proposed that the capital levy should remain at *> s for men and Is for ladles, but that a percentage of the sum raised by each association should be retained by it and the balance remitted to the New Zealand Association. Mr L. Seifert, Palmerston North, said he was of the opinion that golf could not be worked in New Zealand without some centralised organisation. Other delegates objected on the score of expense, and said golf was an individual game, and it could not be seen what work there would be for subassociations tO do. The proposal was rejected. The council was re-elected with the s events be separated.
