Pink Coat and Eaglet

Ono of the star turns at Ellerslie next Saturday will be the race between Eaglet and Pink Coat in the Great Northern Guineas, says the Wellington writer “Vedette.” The Northern filly has done all her work so far this season in irreproachable style, but in Pink Coat she will find an opponent well worthy of her. Eaglet’s defeat of Lady Quex and Silvermino over six furlongs at Ellerslie when carrying lib over weigh t-for-age, was probably her best effort, and it was a courageous and sterling one, for she gave Lady Quex several lengths start over the last two furlongs, and then defeated her. Pink Coat carried 9.6 when he won at Ashburton against much more moderate opposition, but his manner and general appearance impressed more than one good judge. Ho showed last year that he,was class for his five races, record four firsts and one second, while this year lie has Avon at liis only outing. His defeat last year Avas anything but discreditable, for both he and his conqueror, Silver Paper, carried, a 3 01b penalty in the C.J.C. Challenge Stakes, and Pink Coat disputed every inch of the seven furlongs, to be beaten by half a length in lmin 24 4-ssec. it Avas a sterling go. and tho way the two-year-old battled out the finish, hall-marked him as a high-grade performer. Eaglet has raced at Ellerslie, and Pink Coat has yet to perform over its undulations and show his paces the reverse way round. There is always tho danger that a young horse at Ellerslie A\ill bore out badly in his first races there. This is the only doubt that arises in regard to Pink Coat. Eaglet being a filly, may not b© caught at her best, but it is to be hoped that both youngsters are fit to give of their best, and the race should bo A\'ell Avorth Avhile. There should bo little in it at the finish.
