SYSTEM VIOLATED

ASSOCIATION CAN PROTECT OWNERS ALERON’S METHVEN MARK Aleron was scratched for all engagements at the Methven Trotting Club’s annual meeting on the appearance of the handicaps. It appears that liis connections have good cause for withdrawing Aleron. as an analysis of his handicap will disclose. Aleron won off 3.34 at the Earthquake Relief meeting in 3.22, and if the maximum penalty was applied lie could only be brought back to 3.30. In view of this, it is surprising to find him assessed on a 3.27 basis in the Methven Cup, and at 3.252* in tho Visitors’ Handicap of a mile and a-quarter. It is clear that the new rules have not been observed in cither case, and the association will require to find out the reason of this and other handicapping discrepancies, if the system is to be worth the paper it is tabulated on. “Abaydos” would suggest that if handicappers fail in their duty as laid down by tho powers, the association should delegate itself tho power to make the necessary corrections in fairness to owners, who nominate on the understanding that they are protected by the maximum clauses of the new system.
