In the men’s singles Van Ryn defeated Frank Shields. S —6. 6 —4, 6 — 2. Mrs. Slieppard-Barron and Bell won the mixed doubles championship by defeating Miss Nuthall and Farauharson, 6 —4, G —4. In the semi-finals of the women’s doubles Mrs. Covcll and Mrs. SheppardBarron (England) defeated Mrs. Bundy and Miss McFarland, 6—3, 6 —2; Miss Nuthall and Mrs. Phoebe Watson, defeated Mrs. Harper and Miss Cross, 6—3 t u—4. in the final Mrs. Coveil and Mrs. Sheppard-Bnrron defeated Miss Nuthall and Mrs. Watson. OPENING AT MANGERE COURTS IN FINE ORDER The Mangere East Lawn Tennis Club opened its season in beautiful weatheron Saturday. There was a large attendance of members and visitors, including a number of players from town. The courts were formally declared open by Mr. M. M. Kirkbride, and short speeches were given in addition bv Messrs. S. W. House. Rickard, and E‘ W. Griffiths, Mr. Griffiths striking a popular note by commending the condition of the court and grounds, which are in first-class order. \ progressive tournament was played during the afternoon, and traditional hospitality was dispensed by the women of the club.
