DIOMEDE’S DEPARTURE

TRADITIONAL CEREMONY AT SAILING OFFICERS APPOINTED Eleven o’clock is the hour of departure of H.M.S. Diomede for England on Wednesday morning. MANY visitors were on board the vessel at Central Wharf yesterday afternoon. The impending departure from the New Zealand station had an illustration in the flying of the payingoff pennant. The Diomede may be open for inspection tomorrow. In England the cruiser will be refitted extensively. There will be the traditional naval observances for the departure. The cruiser’s band will play customary tunes as the ship swings clear. About 45 of the 80 or 100 New Zealanders on board the cruiser liav.e volunteered for service on other stations. China, Africa, the East Indies or the Mediterranean will see them. The leaving of the Diomede has brought about rearrangements in ■ the appointment of officers in the New Zealand division. Pierce, Commissioned Gunner A. H. Price and Warrant Engineer G. H. Cummins H.M.S. Diomede. —Commander H. L. Morgan, D. 5.0., Commander A. E. T. Tate, D.S.C., Lieutenant-Commander C. S. Britton, Lieutenant-Commander E. H. Longsdon, Lieutenant G. N. Rawlings, Lieutenant W. A. Dallmeyer, Captain E. Bowring, R.M., SurgeonCommander S. Bradbury, Paymaster - Commander W. M. There is even tradition in the flying of the paying-off pennant. The long white streamer is lengthened with each additional month to the two years for a vessel’s stay at her station.
