NO NEW STATION
CHRISTCHURCH PLAN DELAYED DEPARTMENTAL RESERVE (From Our Resident Reporter) WELLINGTON, Today. Though definite pronouncement is lacking and nothing will be known until the production of the Railway Statement in Parliament there is an uneasy feeling that the Government will not go ahead with the new Christchureh station as yet. Departmental heads are naturally reserved on what is a Ministerial matter, but it is no secret that in some quarters there is a feeling that the present station is large enough for current needs and that it would be as well to await developments before planning a new layout. However, the issue raised by the Government’s decision to push ahead with the completion of the South Island Main Trunk is bound to have an important bearing on the case. If the traffic that follows the completion of the line is up to expectations it will make Christchurch a bigger station than ever and materially tax the existing station and yard. For this reason it is believed that even if the department decides not to go ahead with the construction of the station plans for future development are likely to be prepared.
