BOARDINGHOUSE FIRE
FOUR ROOMS BADLY DAMAGED BRIGADE’S SMART WORK A particularly tine save of the . frame of a burning boarding house at 20 Carlton Gore Road was made this morning by two engines from the City Fire Station. 'J'HE fire began at 9.15 a.m., and a telephone call brought the firemen. Within a quarter of an hour of the alarm the flames were extinguished. An elderly widow, Mrs. Mary Langwell, conducted the boarding house, which was badly damaged. She was in the wash-house, away from the house, when the fire began. It was a question of minutes for the fire, fanned by a steady breeze, to sweep through the rooms. Two rooms were gutted and two other main rooms were badly damaged. The kitchen, a small bedroom at the rear, and another small room in the front escaped serious damage. There was insurance on the house, owned by Mr. D. Flynn, of £I,OOO in the London and Lancashire Fire Insurance Company. Mrs. Langwell’s personal effects were not insured, and her loss was severe. The property of several of the boarders is stated to have been insured. None of the furniture could be removed. While the fire swept the inside of the house, the exterior showed few signs of the outbreak.
