“MENACE TO COMMUNITY”
VAGRANT GAOLED FOR THREE MONTHS SLEPT BEHIND SHED Describing him as a menace to the community, Mr. F. K. Hunt, S.M., sentenced James Cromwell to three months’ Imprisonment when he appeared at the Police Court this morning on a charge of vagrancy. Cromwell, a butcher aged 54, pleaded guilty to being idle and disorderly, having . insufficient lawful means of support. The back of a shed was Cromwell’s bedroom, according to Sub-Inspector McCarthy. "He has been in and out of gaol for two or three years and has 55 previous convictions. He was found at 2:30 in the morning, sleeping among some packing cases and it is hard to ijnow what to do with him,” added the sub-inspector. “There is only one thing to do with him,” commented the magistrate. "He is a menace when he is out of gaol.” Also charged with vagrancy, Thomas Pawson, a fireman, aged 23, was remanded, at the sub-inspector’s request, until tomorrow.
