HUNTING CRY IMPRESSIVE Now a Classic Winner AT Hastings on Saturday Hunting Cry won the Hawke’s Bay Guineas pulling up. It was such an easy victory that it is doubtful if either Eaglet or Pink Coat could have done any better. One result of the Hastings classic is that Hunting Cry now enters into the calculations for next Saturday’s Great Northern Guineas; lie is due to arrive at Ellerslie tomorrow morning’. especial to THE SUNJ
HASTINGS. Sunday
The Hawke’s Bay Jockey Club’s spring meeting was held yesterday in wintry weather, which occasionally was showery. The attendance was fair, and the track good. The to talisator handled £13,479, as against £15,374 last year. Tomoana Hurdles Hard Gold was favourite fox* the Tomoana Handicap Hui'dles. but was well beaten. Essential and Tanagra led in the early stages from Alaric, Pi'incess Elizabeth. Hard Gold and Royal Elm. Royal Elm w r ent to the front entering the back the last time, and Alai'ic and Tresham ran up. Alaric led Pesliwa, Royal Elm, Tresham and Hard Gold four furlongs from home, but at the entrance to the straight Royal Elm ran to the front and won easily by a length from Tresham, who beat Jen by four lengths, with Pesliwa fourth. Trial Stakes I’m Alone and Auda were backed heavily for the Trial Stakes, and both were well beaten. Tea Taster. King Acre and Winlock were out in front most of the way, and in the end King Aero won easily by half a length from Tea Taster, while Manifesto ran into third place two lengths behind Tea Tastei\ AVinlock was fourth and Best Friend at the head of the others. I’m Alone and Auda did not get away with the field and were never in the picture. Glengarry Handicap Masher and Chopin were entrusted with big money in tho hack mile, and they paid the dividends. Clever and Clarendon led along tho back from Masher, with Cliopin handy. Masher took charge at the enti'ance to tho straight, but Chopin headed him. Under pressure Masher came again and won by a nose. Arrowhead was a poor third and Tourist fourth. Likely improvers are Clever and Tourist. Hawke’s Bay Guineas
Hunting Cry demonstrated his class in the Hawke’s Bay Guineas by winning in very easy fashion, swamping tho opposition over the last furlong, giving evidence that ho will have to be reckoned with next week at Ellerslie. Hunting Cry and Admiral Drake monopolised the betting, the former having a slight call, and a ticket on both of them would have shown a microscopic profit. My Own, third favoui'ite, was at a good pi'ice. and was just touched off for second money. From a good start Air Laddie and Hunting Cry led round the bend into the back stretch, attended by Admiral Di-ake. When they were bowling along past the five furlongs. Admiral Drake made a move, and at the halfmile the Chief Ruler colt was out clear from Air Laddie, My Own and Hunt- • ing Cry. At the tux*n for home there was not a great deal between Admiral Drake, My Own, Roundelay and Hunting Cry. Once straightened up Hunting Cry was asked for his effort by Goldfinch, and from this out it was a one-horse race, the favourite coming on to scoi*e a most convincing victory by four lengths. Admiral Drake / hung on well to bold My Own off by 3 a head, with Ex Dono fourth another - length away. Then came Air Laddie, s Don Quixote and Roundelay at inter--2 vals, the last named bleeding a bit. It - was an impressive effort, and will give - Hunting Cry a good chance in the - Great Northern Guineas. He has 1 Improved out of all knowledge during l the past few weeks. Spring Handicap Kick Off was a good favourite for C tho Spi'ing Handicap. Mountain , Heath and High Court led along the - back from Blimp and Kick Off, with . Queen’s Choice last. Entering the 1 straight Mountain Heath, High Court and Blimp were in line, but Blimp was wide out. Kick Off came through in the middle and Queen’s Choice on 3 the rails. Kick Off winning by a length . from Queen’s Choice, with High Court - a length away third and King’s Jest t i a length away in fourth place. Kick Off pi'actically out-classed the oppo--3 sition. uueen’s Choice ran up to form, [ but High Court with a better run 2 might have been second. Nursery Handicap In the Nursery Handicap. Chry- . sology (bracketed with Rapallo) was j sent out a very warm favourite over . the Wanganui winner, Sirnba (coupled L with Jennie Diver), but Simba won . very easily. Simba led round the • home turn from Chrysology, with Sea i Scout, Princess Betty, and War Worn > handy. In the run home, Simba came • right away, and won by four lengths » from Chrysology, who beat the fast--1 finishing War Worn by half a length. ■ Sea Scout was fourth, and Princess Betty next. ’ Flaxmere Handicap ! Backers plumped very strongly for Sylvan Dell in the hack sprint, but L once again they showed a loss on their investments. The winner tuimed up ‘ in Potency, who was at good odds. Potency soon got to the front, and led from Sylvan Dell, Te Awha, and Shot ! Silk. Potency was first into the straight, but was challenged by Sylvan Dell, and in a good finish the former won by half a length. Te Awha was a moderate third, and Repay fourth. Flying Handicap In a fair pool Gi'eat Charter was a. good favourite, but. Royal Lineage, Toxeuma, Arrow Lad. and Merry Damon were all inquired for, with the others at any old price. Merry Mint suffered badly in an uneven " start. 1 Plimmerton led out from Great Charj ter, Royal Lineage, Goshawk, and Arrow Lad, but crossing the top Goshawk faded out, the order into tho home stretch being Plimmerton, Gi'eat Charter, Royal Lineage, Arrow Lad, and Toxeuma. At the distance the favourite had run up to Plimmerton, who then retired, and when the favourite looked like scoring nicely. Arrow Lad came at him, only failing by a bead to down Great Charter. Royal Lineage was three lengths away in third place. Great Charter pulled up lame after j the race, and it is now doubtful if be i will go to Auckland, although F. Davis may take the two-year-old Chrvsology only. Following are the results; Tomoana Hurdles, of £150; 12 miles.— 2 Royal Elm. 9.7 (C. McGovern), 1; 5 Tresham, 10. S (A. Jenkins), 2; 9 Jen 10.1 (A.
