“FIFTEEN A SHILLING"
HAURAKI PLAINS’ BARGAIN IN WHARVES PURCHASE COMPLETED (From Our Oxen Correspondent) NGATEA, Friday. The acceptance by the U-uids Dniinage Department of the Hauraki Plains County Council’s offer of one shilling for the 15 wharves on the Piako River and at Waitakaruru, was further considered by the council at a special meeting held for the purpose on Thursday. The chairman, Cr. C. W. 1-1 ari is. reported that the department had agreed to repair t-he Kailiere Wharf and remove the remains of Johnstone’s Wharf. The engineer, Mr. F. Basham, said that most of the other wharves were necessary for the unloading of road metal and many had been kept in repair for that purpose. He would not attempt to estimate the cost of repairs as many of the structures were in very bad state. Pie would not recommend taking over all the wharves as improved roading had caused some *■:' them to be very little used. The council decided to proceed with the purchase and appointed the chair - man, Cr. C. W. Harris, and Crs. C. W. Par fit t and W. E. Hale, with the clerk, to continue the negotiations.
